“I think everyone’s going to be super terrified by it. Even I was, and I’m in the movie.”

That’s Joey King’s assessment of WISH UPON, the new supernatural horror film she headlines that is coming out in mid-July. The young actress stars as not-particularly-popular high schooler Clare Shannon, who finds herself in possession of a magical box that grants its owner any wish they can conceive of. As horror fans will no doubt predict, the wishes come with a price: For every gift Claire gives herself, someone she knows suffers a horrendous fate.

The question is, what would you do if you knew that was happening? Evidently, it’s tough for Clare to put a stop to it.

“As much as you’re rooting for her, because you love her and she’s our hero, there’s a part of you that’s like, ‘You’re a disgusting human being for letting this happen,'” says King. “Which is really cool, because the audience is living through it in way where they’re not liking the main character for a minute, which is so unique. A lot of times that doesn’t happen. They go on this roller coaster with her, because ultimately she’s knowingly doing these things. It’s very heartbreaking to watch.”

I had the pleasure of visiting the Toronto set of WISH UPON last year, and while the full report won’t go up until the week of the film’s release (July 14th), you can get a sneak peek at what’s in store with a big batch of exclusive images (including a couple behind-the-scenes pics of King and director John R. Leonetti) to go along with the above quotes from King. She has a lot more to say about the film and her character, so keep your eyes peeled next week for plenty of deadly-wish goodness.

The film’s official synopsis:

17-year-old Clare Shannon (Joey King) is barely surviving the hell that is high school, along with her friends Meredith (Sydney Park) and June (Shannon Purser). So when her dad (Ryan Phillippe) gifts her an old music box with an inscription that promises to grant the owner’s wishes, she thinks there is nothing to lose. Clare makes her first wish and, to her surprise, it comes true. Before long, she finally has it all: money, popularity and her dream boy. Everything seems perfect – until the people closest to her begin dying in gruesome and twisted ways. Now, with blood on her hands, Clare has to get rid of the box, before it costs her and everyone she loves the ultimate price.

Also starring Ryan Phillippe, Ki Hong Lee, Mitchell Slaggert, Shannon Purser, Sydney Park, Alice Lee, Kevin Hanchar and Sherilyn Fenn, WISH UPON opens July 14th.
