Exclusive: Scott Derrickson talks Sinister 2 and Deliver Us From Evil 2

Last Updated on August 5, 2021

Scott Derrickson’s DELIVER US FROM EVIL is coming at us in a few short weeks (as you can tell by the barrage of videos we’ve been “delivering” lately), and the director is currently on the promotional trail for the thriller. I was fortunate enough to talk to Scott about the film just yesterday, and while the full interview is still on its way, there are a few updates worth sharing.

As we all know, SINISTER 2 is moving forward with Ciaran Foy at the helm and Derrickson back as producer and co-writer (along with C. Robert Cargill). Details have predictably been hard to come by on the sequel, but I wanted to find out when it was moving forward and what Scott’s involvement would be – as he’s also currently prepping a little something called DOCTOR STRANGE. Here’s what he had to say:

We start shooting in August, I’m going to go down to the set. I’m producing the movie, I wrote the script with [C. Robert] Cargill. It was a laborious process, we took a long time to write it. We threw out a lot of pages, because we didn’t want to settle for a predictable script, we wanted it to feel like a SINISTER sequel, the kind of sequel we would want to see because we’re such fans of the genre. We both know horror franchises so well, and we’re both pretty sensitive to how they can go awry, what you don’t want to see. I think we found just the right angle for it; it’s fresh and unpredictable yet provides the kind of stuff you want to see from a SINISTER sequel.

I asked Scott if we’ll be getting SINISTER 2 in 2015, but it’s clearly too early to tell, even for him.

I don’t know what the release date is. I’m sure the financiers have something in mind, but I don’t know.

I then wondered if he was thinking of moving forward with more DELIVER US FROM EVIL films. The book it’s based on, “Beware the Night” by former detective Ralph Sarchie, is chock full of paranormal incidents, all potentially movie-worthy. Derrickson’s response:

That’ll depend on how well the film does financially, but if it does well enough, there will be more. I think all of us involved in it love these characters, and would like to make more of them.

Scott seems very upbeat about his latest scarefest, and it’s clear he’s down to get a DELIVER US franchise moving forward if the fans support it. The movie opens on July 2nd.
