Filmax inks US deal on Manuel Carballo’s The Returned

LevelFILM has picked up US rights to zombie thriller THE RETURNED from Spanish genre hub Filmax, according to Screen Daily.

Kris Holden-Reid, Emily Hampshire and Shawn Doyle star in director Manuel Carballo’s thriller from the producers behind the [REC] franchise that recently had its world premiere at Sitges as well as playing Busan, Strasbourg and Trieste.

We last reported on THE RETURNED back in September when we shared some new stills and a fresh new poster for the flick. This followed the Spanish-language trailer we shared with you back in April.

The Canadian-Spanish co-production between Ramaco Media and Filmax follows “a young couple hiding a long-held secret in a post-zombie world, where the infected live normal lives but their retroviral drug is running out.” The extended synopsis is below:

Kate works at the hospital in the Return Unit, helping those who have been infected by the virus that turns people into zombies. Kate’s dedication to her work is absolute, but few people realize that for her it is also a personal matter; Kate’s own husband, Jason, has been returned.

After various brutal and prolific attacks at the hands of Anti-Return groups and rumors that the “Protein” stock is running dangerously low, Kate fears for Jason´s safety. Suspicious of the government’s order that all the returned should report to a secure medical facility ‘for their own safety’, the couple decides to flee, taking with them all the doses of “Return Protein” they have. At no point does the couple imagine that the real threat is a lot closer than they think…

US theatrical and day-and-date VOD release is set for February 14, 2014. Sounds like a perfect Valentine's Day date flick to me!
