Focus World acquires French cannibal film Raw

Julia Ducournau Garance Marillier Raw

Focus Features' multiplatform distribution initiative Focus World has acquired the rights to release the French-language cannibal thriller RAW in multiple territories around the globe. Dates and details were not revealed, but Focus did announce that they're planning a spring 2017 theatrical release for the film in the United States.

RAW is the feature debut of writer/director Julia Ducournau and stars Garance Marillier as

the teenaged Justine, who commences her studies at veterinary school to follow in her family members’ footsteps. Raised as a vegetarian, Justine is pressured at school to try meat for the first time. Once she does, she plumbs both the depths of her own soul and tests the limits of her darkest cravings.

So for anyone who recommends that vegetarians put aside their convictions and eat some meat, let this film serve as a warning to you. What starts with a burger could end up in cannibalism.

RAW was a prize winner at this year's Cannes International Film Festival. Focus World SVP Anjay Nagpal had this to say about the film: "While favorably recalling some of cinema’s greatest tales of terror, RAW is its own animal, a completely distinctive and fresh piece of work. We are thrilled to serve Julia's galvanizing first feature to audiences around the world."
