Fox officially green lights Independence Day sequel!

Last Updated on August 5, 2021

Ahhh Roland Emmerich's INDEPENDENCE DAY (1996). Goldblum, Pullman and aliens arriving and blowing shit up aside, I hated everything about that freaking movie; Smith, Quaid, the tacky humor, the barf inducing one-liners and the dense turn of events.  But hey, it made a ton of coin ($811 million worldwide) and now we got ONE sequel coming our way for sure (not two as previous reports indicated)!

Twentieth Century Fox just officially gave the green light to the follow up which is slated to enter production in May of 2015 with a June 24, 2016 release date being flirted with (I wouldn't be surprised if they moved that up to the July 4th weekend, for obvious reasons). Will "Welcome to Earth" Smith won't be back (Thank Crom!) and casting will start once Fox signs on Emmerich as director. The script was written by Rolan Emmerich and Dean Devlin then was reworked by James Vanderbilt and then re-written by Carter Blanchard. More news when we get some! I hope it's NOTHING like the first film…
