Gremlins 3 will be dark & twisted and may kill off Gizmo

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

One of the top movies I have been looking forward to for most of my life (not kidding) is GREMLINS 3.

I love the first two films so much that a third film would pretty much be the coolest thing I can imagine other than a BACK TO THE FUTURE PART IV or a Spielberg-directed JAWS sequel.

While there seems to be little hope that we will ever see the two latter flicks come in be, a sequel to GREMLINS 2: THE NEW BATCH is very much on the horizon and recently original GREMLINS screenwriter, turned director, Chris Columbus was speaking with /Film about just that.

Turns out the new film is in development (duh) and there is a new script – which, get this, features practical Gremlins, is "twisted and dark" and may feature the killing of Gizmo for the greater good.

Chris Columbus on GREMLINS 3:

I’m really proud of the script. It is as twisted and dark as anything, so we’ll see. It’s always a budgetary conversation when we’re going to shoot it. I wanted to go back to the really twisted sensibility of the first movie. I found that was a very easy place for me to fall back into and start writing again so hopefully we’ll see that movie soon.

Chris Columbus on practical vs CGI Gremlins:

Oh, without a doubt, minimal CGI. CGI will enable us to remove wires and make the puppeteers lives a little easier. It was brutal. It was like a marathon every night for those guys. In the bar scene alone there were 18 [or] 20 people behind the bar. No one had any space to move. It was just hellish for those guys so CGI will simplify that a little bit but it’s all puppets.

Chris Columbus on killing Gizmo:

Very good observation. That comes up in the movie, certainly. I think it probably is a good idea to be honest with you. Too many people are dying.

Let me just say that I am on board with practical Gremlins and a darker, more twisted tone, but I swear to the God of thunder that if they kill off Gizmo I'm going to lead the riots into the streets.

Maybe turning him into a Gremlin isn't such a bad idea though…

GREMLINS 3 is now in development at Warner Brothers.
