Guillermo del Toro teams up with Disney to bring us Haunted Mansion 3D?

Is Disney and Guillermo del Toro a marriage y'all would like to see persist?

Not only is del Toro in cahoots with Disney to usher in DON'T BE AFRAID OF THE DARK this coming January (directed by Troy Nixey), it appears the man is staying in the land of Mickey and Minnie to bring us yet another indubitably child-centric spookster called THE HAUNTED MANSION. And yes, the project is based on the famed Haunted Mansion attraction we've all gone through at a Disney theme park, be it in Anaheim, Orlando, Tokyo, Paris, whatever.

Word came from del Toro himself, who made the public announcement today at the 2010 Comic-Con. Here's what he said:

“Dark imagery is an integral part of the Walt Disney legacy. After all, Disney himself was the father of some really chilling moments and characters - think Chernabog from Fantasia or Maleficent as the Dragon or the Evil Queen in Snow White,” said del Toro. “I couldn't be more excited to be a part of my own adaptation of the original theme park attraction Walt envisioned and that remains- for me- the most desirable piece of real estate in the whole world!"

About the prospect, Chairman of Walt Disney Studios Rich Ross added:

“Millions of people from around the world visit The Haunted Mansion each year, but no one has ever had a tour guide like Guillermo del Toro. Guillermo is one of the most gifted and innovative filmmakers working today and he is going to take audiences on a visually-thrilling journey like they’ve never experienced before.”

Not really sure what to make of this marriage. I'll say this...if del Toro directs the film, than it can be something worth tracking. If not, my guess is it'll be not so memorable when all is said and done. What say you?

Since August 1969, foolish mortals have dared to trespass on the macabre grounds of Disney’s Haunted Mansion. A hallowed landmark in Disneyland’s New Orleans square, it’s the dwelling place of 999 happy haunts dying to meet new visitors each day. The plantation-style of the mansion’s facade is a sweet deception for visitors. Inside, ghostly doom buggies line the hallways. Since its construction, the mysteries of the mansion have transcended the attraction with stories surfacing about horrifying encounters with the supernatural.

Extra Tidbit: Did I mention the flick will be in 3D? Then again, which flick isn't these days?
