Happy B-day... in 3D?

Jun. 2, 2009by: Ammon Gilbert
Over a year ago we got word that a remake of HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME was in the works (check that shite HERE), but a lot has happened since then. While the film still hasn't started yet, another 80s slasher was remade with all kinds of success: MY BLOODY VALENTINE 3D.

Where am I going with this? According to BD, Lionsgate (who released VALENTINE) now has plans on remaking HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME... in 3D! And while that's cool and all, they're apparently doing this in lieu of going forward with MY BLOODY VALENTINE 2. Say whaaaaat???

Lionsgate had the chance to pimp the new VALENTINE film into a full-fledged franchise, coming up with something original for the sequel, and opted to just go with another remake instead? Seriously? What the shit is going on here?

Given the awesomeness of the 3D in VALENTINE, I can dig on some BIRTHDAY 3D--especially if it can still pump out the crazy gore, and improve on the overall film. But a part of me just wishes they'd go with the VALENTINE sequel... or here's a crazy idea: why not do both?

The original BIRTHDAY went a little something like this: Virginia is proud that she belongs to a clique. The best students at a private school. But before her 18th birthday, a grueling set of murders take place and her friends are the ones who are falling prey. Could it be her? She suffers from blackouts due to a freak accident one year earlier. We soon learn the truth behind her accident and what is going on...

Extra Tidbit: In 1982, Melissa Sue Anderson was nominated for the Best Young Motion Picture Actress for her work in HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME at the Young Artist Movie Awards.
