Hellboy creator says there won’t be a third film

Last Updated on August 5, 2021

Here’s some disappointing, but not unsurprising, news. HELLBOY creator Mike Mignola recently sat down with Comic Book Resources to talk about the latest series of the comic and shared his thoughts on the long-awaited third film in the HELLBOY franchise, mentioning that aside from the difficulty in explaining the release pattern for the book, the other public relations deal that he’ll have to continually deal with is that “there’s no Hellboy 3 movie.” Despite an army of baying fans just waiting to see their grizzled red antihero on the big screen once more, it sounds as though there are no immediate plans to bring HELLBOY 3 into being.

While Mignola, who shares a co-executive producer credit on the first two HELLBOY films, seems certain that a third film will not happen and that seems to sound fairly official, we previously heard that Guillermo del Toro, Ron Perlman and Selma Blair were all still interested in wrapping up the epic story. Perlman has stated in the past his desire to don the red makeup again, but shared his opinion that it may never happen. Selma Blair spoke out as recently as last October on a potential end to the trilogy, stating that she was as eager as the fans in seeing another chapter come to fruition.

But, given that del Toro’s slate is already jam-packed for the coming 18 months or so with numerous projects, including CRIMSON PEAK, Mignola’s claim that there won’t be a third movie seems difficult to dispute. While del Toro would certainly be consulting Mignola if there was a movie happening, the fact that there isn’t one right now or solid plans for one in the next couple years, doesn’t mean that it won’t happen at all. There is always hope that the success of PACIFIC RIM could change things and get people more excited about another del Toro directed installment of HELLBOY.

Hey, we can all hope, can’t we?
