Horror @ the Box Office – May 20-22: Priest falls to #6

Last Updated on July 23, 2021

Despite the predicted end of the world, plenty of people still went to see PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: ON STRANGER TIDES for a #1 opening. You’d think they’d want to show their faith with something religious, like Scott Charles Stewart’s PRIEST, which opened at #4 last week. Instead, it fell to #6 with $4.6 million, a drop off of about 70%.

Otherwise, it was once again a rather uneventful weekend for horror at the box office. James Wan’s INSIDIOUS came in at #14 with $469,000, and Duncan Jones’ SOURCE CODE made another $402,000 at #16. Not bad for flicks that have been out for months. The number of theaters that played Wes Craven’s SCREAM 4 was cut way back again, and the flick brought in another $84,000.

As bad as these last couple of weeks have been for the genre, the next one will be even worse. The only theatrical openings are THE HANGOVER 2 and KUNG FU PANDA 2, so we’ll be lucky if we even see PRIEST cling on to a Top 10 spot. You might as well queue up your DVD/Blu-ray player, because the theater won’t have much to offer for a few weeks.
