Horror @ the Box Office - May 27-29: A sad, genre-free Top 10

May. 30, 2011by: Alex DiVincenzo

Holiday weekends aren't usually too hot for the genre, and Memorial Day was no exception. As expected, THE HANGOVER II and KUNG FU PANDA 2 dominated at the box office, and no new horror movies were released. Sadly, we had a genre-free Top 10.

The highest ranking horror flick was Scott Charles Stewart's PRIEST, which which came in at #11 with $1.7 million in its third week. Duncan Jones' SOURCE CODE remained at #18 with $324,000, which is pretty good for its ninth week. James Wan's INSIDIOUS and Wes Craven's SCREAM 4 both fell out of the Top 20.

Not much to report on otherwise. Next weekend, the only wide release hitting theaters is Matthew Vaughn's X-MEN: FIRST LAST, which I suppose is as close to a genre flick as we'll get. The following week, however, we'll finally see the release of J.J. Abrams' Super 8.
