The Arrow
interviews Debbie Rochon
Debbie
Rochon has been in over thirty horror films. Her resume includes: Toxic
Avenger 4, Hellblock 13, Split, Tromeo And Juliet, Santa Claws…to name a
few. In 1997, she won the Barbarella award for best actress in the flick
“Broadcast Bombshells”. Besides acting, she also co-hosts the Tim Reid The
Movie Guy With Debbie Rochon show. It’s a radio show on the net. The
Arrow was on once and it’s a lot of fun. Debbie and The Arrow shared a
few words. This is how it went down.
1-
What’s
your favorite horror movie, sweetheart?
That’s
a tough one. Right now it’s probably Cemetery Man. But it constantly
changes.
2-
Your
career seems to be reserved to the low budget horror genre, do you have
any intentions of branching out into more mainstream fodder? Is this a
choice or a result of circumstance?
Probably
a result of both. I love independent movies, specifically independent
horror movies. I’ve always loved them since I was a child. In 1992 I was
cast in my first low budget vampire film, which was never released, and I
went to endless horror conventions to promote it at the time. So I wound
up in various genre magazines and networked with some filmmakers and just
found myself working in horror/sci-fi/explotation flicks after that. I
also began writing for a number of magazines and landed myself a regular
column in The Joe Bob Report which was helmed by Joe Bob Briggs of course.
So I spent most of my time working and writing about the genre. I would
like to work in more mainstream stuff simply for the money and because
it’s easier to get the titles seen by more people. But I love working,
that’s the bottom line.
3-
You
have a part in Toxic Avenger 4. Why do you think the Toxie movies are so
successful? I for one still don’t get it.
Well, Lloyd Kaufman had an
amazing idea when he came up with the first Toxic Avenger script. He
combined camp, comedy, horror and social statements in this film. You
don’t have to get the social commentary to enjoy it though. I personally
like his films because they cause such a big reaction in the audience.
That to me is what seeing a movie is all about. If you walk out of a movie
theater having not been affected by the film, then it was a complete
failure. I think even if you’re grossed out or offended it made you feel
something! I have a lot of respect for a guy who has the balls to make
movies that push the envelope as much as his work does.
4-
What’s
the most challenging part you had to play as an actress?
The
hardest part so far has been the character Cyclops in Split (www.splitbrain.com).
She is the ultimate cold, unfeeling and remorseless killer. Women almost
never get to play a part like that. There are parts for bitchy characters,
but this part was originally written for a man. It was a hard part to play
because of the physical stunts. My face gets smashed through a window, I
have TONS of shoot-em-up scenes and fight scenes. But when all is said and
done this movie will kick butt at the festivals!
5-
What’s
the worst audition you ever had?
Well,
I’m not a fan of any auditions, but I was talking with a casting director
for about 2 months, this was about 10 years ago, and finally he gave me
the address of his ‘new’ office to come and meet him at and when I got
there it was a cheap hotel. Needless to say I never went in!
6-
You
act, do a internet radio show (eyada.com),
what other ambitions do you have in
the entertainment field?
Well, I also have a book out, it’s
called THE B-MOVIE SURVIVAL GUIDE which one could get at www.amazon.com
and I
have a model kit out and that can be found at www.monstersinmotion.com
and
I continue to write for various magazines like Phantom of the Movies’
Videoscope.
7-
I
have to ask for all the dreamers out there (I’m one of them)…are you
married, single, seeing somebody?
Hahahahahahaha.
Divorced, and seeing someone at the moment.
8-
Here’s
the million dollar question: Did you enjoy Battlefield Earth?
I cannot comment, I haven’t
seen it. BUT… I saw Mission Impossible II and actually liked it a lot.
I’m not normally a fan of stupid Hollywood films, but this worked for me.
9-
Do
you believe in aliens? Ever have a close encounter of any kind?
I
believe in aliens. I have not had an encounter but I’m confident they are
out there watching all our movies, the good the bad and the sleazy! I
wonder if they like the sci-fi genre, or are they hopeless romantics and
love flicks like You’ve Got mail? A question to ponder for all of eternity
I’m afraid.
10-
If
you had the choice to play opposite any actor out there, who would it be?
No
doubt…Johnny Depp. If I married him, I’d call myself Debb Depp. Cool huh?
