The Arrow
interviews Raine Brown

Now
and then, I watch an indie flick and pick up on an unknown talent
who I feel has lots of potential in terms of
“stardom”. Well, that happened when I watched Dante
Tomaselli’s “Horror” and noticed the charismatic Raine Brown.
There was just something about her that screamed “success”.
So The Arrow tracked the girl down and tossed a couple of
questions her way. Here’s what she had to say…

1- What’s
your favorite horror movie?

“Horror”!!!
What else! 🙂

2- How
did you fall into acting? Was it a lifelong dream or did you get
into it by fluke?

I’ve always been a bit on the dramatic side. When I was younger I used to dress up with heels and make-up
and pretend I was this Diva I created named Miss Crystal Stardust.
But I actually started in high school plays and theatre
classes. I found
out that I loved to perform, and when I began to audition for
outside projects and got cast most of the time, I
though, ok, hey, I guess I have some talent, so I think I want
to do this. Little
did I know what I would actually be getting myself into.

3-
You
play Amanda in Dante Tomaselli’s “Horror”. Is the character
similar to who you are in reality? What kind of research (if
any) did you do for the part?

Well, Amanda is a recovering drug addict who has
lived a pretty wild life and has a sort of beaten down quality
to her. I am much
more directed and positive then this girl is. I do think that she is like me on my bad days, and if I
had grown up in other situations then I did, I definitely could
see myself having a similar outlook as her. But in real life
I would be smart enough not to go into the attic alone when I
started hearing creepy music play!!!!!!! Come on now, that is just common sense.

In terms of research, I didn’t do much really. I like
to focus on the character, and what makes them tick. I spent hours creating a character bio for her, how she
grew up, what got her where she was, and what her relationships
are to all others involved in the movie. Even though the audience does not know the specifics of
her life, I feel that as an actor, you need to know why you’re
doing what you’re doing. If
the audience comes to the right conclusions about your
character, great, but they might not! But
you need to have subtext, or the viewer will not find you
interesting. I sometimes think that if the audience knows all, then they stop
paying attention. Characters
need a secret! Something
that keeps them guessing!

4- What
was the most grueling element during the “Horror” shoot?
Did the goat ever try to eat your lunch?

The worst time was when we shot the scene at night where Luck and I make
out by the stone fireplace and he throws me on the ground and
spits blood on me. The
throwing me to the ground part was not so bad; I am petite, so
directors love to have me thrown around on sets. I
am used to it. But
the snow was really cold, and then Danny (Luck) actually had to
sit there and spit blood on me! It got everywhere, in my mouth, hair, and eyes.
It was nasty. So
the look on my face of utter disgust was not acting, it was true
disgust.
And about the goat, all I can say it that he behaved
like a perfect gentleman throughout.

5- Were
you ever creeped out on set while shooting, cause I was sure
spooked while watching the film?

Yeah, the attic scene was really pretty scary. It was the first day of shooting, so everyone was fresh and
excited. We shot in
this very old farm-like house in upstate NY.
When we were in the attic, there was this weird energy,
like a heaviness, and coldness to the air. It felt like the air had an energy or presence all its
own. I got pretty
freaked out by that, but I think things like that in the
environment enhances the reality for me.

6-
Have
you seen the finished product yet? What did you think?

Yes! Dante
Tomaselli, the director, showed me the movie a while ago. I loved it! The
mood that Dante creates with the lighting, angles, and sound
effects just touches something in your subconscious.
The entire movie flows like a dream. Even knowing the
script and what happens in the movie, there were a few parts
where I jumped out of my seat!

7- Recent
news has you attached to the Ted Geoghegan scripted “Dry
Rot” starring Thom Matthews and Debbie Rochon. What attracted
you to the script to make you sign on the line that is dotted?

Horror movies are so fun to do. In this one I
play the secretary for this TV company who is trying to create
a reality based show where the people live in a haunted setting. In the movie we all go to this factory which is supposed
to be haunted to check out if the place is really scary or not. I really don’t want to give away what happens, but
let’s
just say that I wanted to do the movie because the action was so
cool. It is just a
great script, and unlike many horror movies, has actual
character development. As an actor I love to work on character,
and as a person I love to do great fun projects, with people who
know what they are doing.

8- Do
you have any other projects lined up? What’s next on your
plate?

As of now, the “Dry Rot” script, and I
work with a few local theatre companies during the year. But
hey, I am always looking for work!! I am hungry for
work. If anyone
reading is interested, I am available!!!

9- Do
you have any other “artistic”aspirations in the movie
business that you plan on pursuing?

I plan to do a movie where I am in a love triangle
with Jude Law and Matt Damon! No,
I don’t know. I
just love to act. I
would love to get my hands on a juicy dramatic script where I
played a person with a mental illness, or a serious period
piece. I just love
the costumes in them.

10-
What
does Raine Brown do with her time when she’s not running away
from demonic goats?

I catch up on what’s happening at www.joblo.com!!
I read a lot, watch TV ( I can’t miss my shows) and movies,
hang with friends, and shop. The typical American dream. I love
to go out and dance, and just forget about everything and get
out all the extra energy I have stored up. Plus, I am in school now and that takes up a lot of my time.

I’d like
to thank Raine for her time! This cutie is one to look out for! I
predict big things for her. Now if “Horror” could only find
distribution so that all of you could see what I’m talking about.
It’s also a kick-ass flick!!!
