IT'S THE BOOZE TALKIN': Do we really need another Resident Evil movie???

08.16.2011by: Ammon Gilbert

When people sit back and think of the great horror franchises over the years, they think of FRIDAY THE 13TH, A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET, HALLOWEEN, SCREAM, and FINAL DESTINATION. And yet, the RESIDENT EVIL franchise has never been brought up as being great—or even good. Mostly, when RESIDENT EVIL is brought up, the conversation goes something like “I sorta liked the first one, but goddamn has all the other ones sucked!” For a franchise that has three high-profile sequels out and kickin’, that’s far from a good reaction, and yet here we are, with the latest news reporting that RESIDENT EVIL: RETRIBUTION is in the works and scheduled to hit theaters everywhere October of 2012. And to this, I say… do we really need another f*cking RESIDENT EVIL movie???

I’ll be straight-up about this one: I could give a f*ck about this series. I hated the first RESIDENT EVIL with a passion, and therefore have hated all the sequels—and I haven’t even seen them all! Each one looks like it could be cool, but I usually let the masses make my decisions for me when it comes to these flicks. So regardless of the fact that the sequels made a f*ckload of money during their opening weekend, there’s no way in shit I’m gonna go and throw down $20 to see it theaters when the word of mouth is always “goddamn that movie sucked!” And that’s the weird thing: sure, they make a lot of money, but are there any true fans of the series, or just people going because they want to believe they’ll finally do the video game some justice and make something awesome? I have no f*cking clue.

Paul WS Anderson is (once again) on board to direct with wife Mila Jovovich slated to reprise her role as Alice, and while Jovovich’s involvement is a must at this point, do we really need Anderson at the helm again, mucking it up in his usual way. Besides EVENT HORIZON, the guy hasn’t made a decent film and I can’t imagine he’s going to start with RESIDENT EVIL 5. Goddamn, just saying that out loud like that is blowing my f*cking mind right now: RESIDENT EVIL 5. Really??? I get that they make a ton of money for Sony Pictures, but another one? Yikes.

From what I’ve played of the game, the movies are nothing alike and (above all else) this seems to be the biggest issue with die hard fans of the game—the movies don’t really do the games justice. So the big question here is, why don’t they take the SPIDER-MAN route at this point and REBOOT the entire series? Start from scratch, get a new director and go an entirely new direction that’s mostly in-synch with the game, because let me tell ya, the movies have been going nowhere fast. Hell, keep Mila Jovovich on as Alice if you want to, just reboot it into something new, something that’s better than what we’ve seen, and something people may actually give a f*ck about, because a RESIDENT EVIL 5 is something no one really gives a f*ck about!

Ok, that’s not true. I know there are die hard fans of the series out there, too. Yes, they do exist—and it only makes sense that there are, otherwise how the hell could each installment make more money than the one before it? But I have to believe that even the die hard fans only like the franchise for its mindless entertainment value and pure eyecandy appeal and not because they’re solid films with good stories and solid action, effects, and tone. Because they’re not—but holy hell do they look good!

Maybe it’s the booze talkin’, but do we really need another f*cking RESIDENT EVIL movie? The first one was bad enough, but I’ll give the benefit of the doubt to that because I know a lot of people actually liked that one. But APOCALYPSE, EXTINCTION, and AFTERLIFE have proved that no matter how much money is spent on special effects, if there’s no time spent on story and characters, the movie’s gonna blow ass. Now that RETRIBUTION is on the way, I can only assume the half-assed approach to filmmaking that Paul WS Anderson is known for will shine and any hope that this one won’t suck donkey balls is already thrown out the window. Take the SPIDER-MAN and PUNISHER approach to this already and reboot the series, aligning it more with the source material (the video games), because one thing’s for sure: we really don’t need more of the same from this franchise.

RE: Extinction wasnt PWST's fault

Paul WS Anderson ruined this franchise, plain and simple... but if it weren't for the direction of that Russell "Highlander" Mulcahy guy... RE:Extinction would have been FAR FAR Worse...that movie borrows liberally from other better movies but it's still the franchise' best sequel after the original (thats not saying much but it's saying something)

This was an awful article. The RE movies have always been a guilty pleasure of mine, and to suggest they "go the spiderman route" and reboot is a terrible idea. One of the things I love about these movies is the fact that not only has the story been allowed to continue, but it's kept it's core of main characters! I'll be seeing Retribution opening night!

yup you nailed it... there are far too many "reboots" now... nobody wants to give any franchise any sort of chance, like batman and spiderman and James Bond, even STAR TREK!!!... they make two movies then reboot the franchise again... cant anybody in Hollywood actually MAKE A DECENT MOVIE anymore?????

you know

the last movie actually wasn't that bad, but the two before it were horrible. The first was a just above average flick, but still didn't live up to the potential. And when I say the last flick wasn't that bad, I don't mean it was good but it was enjoyable for what it was... the problem was, it WASN'T a Resident Evil movie, it was... something... really fucking different.
What we need is MORE Resident Evil movies as the source material can create some GREAT movies, but what we need more

What we need is MORE Resident Evil movies as the source material can create some GREAT movies, but what we need more importantly is a REBOOT with a totally new cast, crew and direction (and seriously -- FUCK alice!)
and I'm not even that big of a fan of the games, but that's the bottom line.

Hope it's good

I am a huge fan of the games, and actually I understand why they went in a different direction, if they played exactly like the games, then why watch the movies, however, I agree they've gone way too far out. I really liked parts 1 and 2, but 3 was when it started going downhill and I couldn't stand part 4, WAY too much slowmo, people doing lame stunts, terrible characters, scenes that made no damn sense...I'll see the 5th I'm sure cuz I've seen the rest, but I'd much prefer a new director,

The first one was decent, two and three had their moments, but four was a complete abortion. This series desperately needs a reboot. The fourth one ended on a cliffhanger, so it might be kind of nice to tie that up before ending the series... but I wouldn't shed any tears if that didn't happen.

Taking movies seriously is fine, but these movies are clearly just for fun and they have a loyal fanbase, which I happen to be a part of. I love each movie, especially the ones W.S. has directed, and I am frothing for a fifth installment. If it's the last one, fine, but I'll be damned if the Resident Evil movies haven't featured some of the best action ever, particularly this most recent one with the incredible ways W.S. used 3D (he's the only director I've seen so far truly understand the

And yeah, they're more action than horror but you can't call a movie bad just because it's not what YOU wanted it to be. Just don't see the movie if you don't want it to happen and be happy that a director you don't care for isn't working on something you might have otherwise looked forward to. In the meantime, I'll be looking forward to a great action artist and his excellent wife taking on a much-anticipated fifth title for this fun-as-hell and really well-made series!

I for one enjoy the series and say keep them coming. I think its just become one of those things for it to be cool to hate on Resident Evil. Like there is not 20 other popular but terrible movies getting sequels every year.

I could give a fuck less, though chances are I'll probably end up watching it and then hating myself. This is one of those rare times where I'm crossing my fingers for a reboot. I mean seriously, the last one would have been 45 minutes long if not for the slow-mo.

Well honestly i like them all but hear me out first, the first one was serious and a great flick but after that it became somewhat cheesy at times and i really never took the series to be serious at all, thats it guys! i never take them films to be serious, they are made for fun to watch and kick ass at just plain cool action [plot always suck], just plain fun fun! Its still better than alot of other sequels coming out these days! At least this series is fast paced and not boring!

RE 1 only please

I really liked the first one but the others were just a let down. And I alos like Paul Anderson but he needs to drop this and get to the Castlevania movie if that can ever get off the ground.

I haven't seen one since part 2. Just don't effin' care about these movies.

I'm all for reinterpretations of source material, but when it's to make something this bland and boring? And Alice has to be one of the most boring heroines ever. She looks cool, but that's about it.

The films have broken away from the game's mythology and taken on a life of their own, which was something I hadn't hoped for. I really don't think we need to see more of Alice and company, per se. If we got back to what the games were about, then maybe.

As it stands, I haven't seen an RE film since RE: APOCALYPSE, and I'm quite content on that.

You completely left out one thing: the foreign market. Sure, these films do moderate here in the states. But go to boxofficemojo and look at how much these films rake in overseas. The last film made over $200 mil. Obviously, bringing in that kind of cash will warrant another film, especially considering that the last film was by far the highest grossing of the series (no doubt helped by the 3D, but still....). To me, they are a delightful kind of camp, like some kind of more serious Bruce Campbell film. And I like Milla Jovovich, so I can't complain about spending 2 hours with her. At this point, these films are pretty much only for the die hard fans. Sure, most people don't like them, but I hear plenty of "I enjoy the series". Enough to warrant more films, I'd say.

Personally, i've enjoyed all the RE films, though to be honest I saw the films before I played a single game in the series(the first game I played being RE4) so I REALLY couldn't care less whether the films are to the games or not. One things for sure, I'd MUCH rather have another RE film then another Paranormal Activity film, that's for damn sure!

I'm pretty indifferent to the whole thing honestly. You can say what you wish, but I've never played any of the games, and I've never seen any of the movies either, so I don't know or care about them. From reading all the previous comments, it doesn't sound like I'm missing out on much though.... It's pretty much typical Hollywood though, they have to milk a semi-decent idea until it's completely dry, and then go and remake/reboot it or do a prequel and start it all over again, rather than

Guess it's far too risky for them to be taking a chance on something that might lose money. Same old story in this day and age unfortunately.

Truthfully, I concur. Although I LOVED (and still do love) the first Resident Evil film, but none of the sequels won me over, especially Apocalypse (which I thought was horrendous). I could live without another sequel.

Oh my god

I am so sick of these "RE movies were nothing like the game, WAAAH" articles. Not every single person out there is a RE gamer! I strictly watch movies and the RE films, well besides the second one, have given me that horror/action fix I love. Do we need another? Nope, and that's all I agree with this article, because MK, Shopping, Death Race, Soldier... all great films. Sorry, but that's just my opinion, like everyone else including the writer of this article has there's.

These movies aren't just an abomination to the Resident Evil series but to "horror action" movies in general. They've slowly morphed into shitty matrix rip-offs with zombies in the background.

We don't need another cocksucking sequel of these series ! Anderson & followers have done it their way ( mindless, dumb entertainment a la Matrix ), now it's time for other directors to take another turn on the series. More akin to classic films and most importantly to the Games ! Less action, No Alice ( and I usually love Milla), no 3D,...more Survival Horror, more creepiness, more weirdness, more creativity, more hardcore gore ( a shitload of it ) and more of a tense psychological turn.

This series has sucked from the start, and I think you're right that A.) nobody gives an 'eff about these sequels and B.) we need a Paul Anderson-less reboot. I think they should film the George A. Romero script that actually had to do with the games from what I've heard.
