Jared Leto’s Joker getting his own standalone film

Last Updated on August 5, 2021

There has been talk over the past year or so that Martin Scorcese and writer-director Todd Phillips are working on a JOKER ORIGIN FILM. But today we have word via Variety that Jared Leto's Joker will be getting HIS own movie as well. Sources say Warner Bros. is looking to expand on Jared Leto’s version of the Joker from David Ayers' SUICIDE SQUAD and that Leto is set to star and exec produce an untitled standalone film.

Plot details are unknown and it’s also currently unknown when this film would go into production. It’s also unclear if this film will shoot before or after SUICIDE SQUAD 2 which is rumored to begin shooting sometime in 2019. All of that uncertainty out of the way, evidently Leto and the studio are searching for a screenwriter to pen this standalone film. So that's SOME progress.

So how does the Scorcese/Phillips JOKER ORIGIN FILM fit into all of this? Well, Phillips’ film falls under a new origins banner that would be separate from the current cinematic DC universe. This new banner "will allow multiple actors and versions based on the same character with no overlap."

All of these projects – including a BIRDS OF PREY movie involving Margot Robbie’s version of Harley Quinn – are part of Warner Bros.' plan to expand the SUICIDE SQUAD world. Whether or not that's a good idea remains to be seen. But however all of this shakes out, we will keep you guys up-to-date on the JOKER aspects so stay tuned!
