Joe Dante discusses the future of the Gremlins franchise!

Sep. 19, 2012by: Ike Oden

Christ. Another day, another bit of GREMLINS news. Aren’t you guys just sick of this franchise hogging up all the horror movie news market with-- wait a minute, did I just write GREMLINS news? We haven’t reported any stories on that in months! Well, it seems a recent interview struck franchise director Joe Dante as the right time to discuss what the future may hold for Gizmo and his Mogwai buddies.

When asked about the possibility he would return for a third film:

”… I was a little leery of revisiting it right after the first picture. So I didn’t. But no one else could figure out what to do with it for a couple of years and so it came back to me. I would certainly entertain the idea [of doing a 3rd film], Gremlins has been very good to me!”

Dante also discussed the reality of a GREMLINS 3 versus a GREMLINS reboot:

“I haven’t had any formal talks, or even informal talks, with them about it. It’s a title in their library that sooner or later will be re-exploited. You can’t obviously do a sequel to the second picture because the cast is too old and I don’t know that that’s the way they’re thinking. I think they’d probably reboot the whole thing and start all over or go in a different direction – take the Gremlins someplace else.”

And, going back to a conceit similarly made by Amblin Entertainment honcho Frank Marshall, Dante pointed to Spielberg as the series ultimate gate keeper:

“I do know that there have been attempts at Gremlins pictures. I know that people have gone in with pitches, but nothing has caught their eye. But I’m not positive that it’s entirely Warner Brothers’ decision. Because it’s an Amblin project, it probably has to be signed off on by Spielberg… I think sooner or later there will be something, I just don’t know what it is yet.”

So there you have it. Dante thinks another GREMLINS entry is inevitable, but the property has a lot of hoops to jump through to get made. What do you think, Schmoes? Should we have a GREMLINS 3, GREMLINS reboot, GREMLINS remake or just leave the series well enough alone? Talk back below with your thoughts…

Extra Tidbit: A remake would be hard pressed to replace the sultry Phoebe Cates (pictured above).

A reboot could be the right way to go for three reasons. Firstly, Gremlins is the name of the film. The title "Gremlins" will attract always the younger set. The younger set might not have seen the original two films, and they might not want to check-out such "old" fare before any sequel. Secondly, The New Batch has been around for twenty-two years. At this point, even older moviegoers are not chapping at the bit for a sequel. One supposes that the Gremlins could terrorize the middle-aged

At this point, even older moviegoers are not chapping at the bit for a sequel. One supposes that the Gremlins could terrorize the middle-aged protagonists and their kids and that Cates and Galligan could play the Hoyt Axton role in this one. But. . . . Thirdly, Joe Dante says that a reboot is best. I trust his judgment because he's Joe Dante and, as shown, I already agree with his judgment.
