Judge Dredd: Mega-City One will be macabre & insane yet light-hearted

Last Updated on August 5, 2021

It was only last month that we let you guys know that there is a JUDGE DREDD series in the works and if that wasn't cool enough, then we got word that DREDD star Karl Urban might be returning as the Dredd himself.

Now that we have had some time to get over our initial shaking spells of excitement, we bring you an update on the series straight from one of the show's executive producers and Rebellion CEO Jason Kingsley.

Kingsley recently sat down for a chat with SFX magazine and dropped a few cool hints about what direction the new series will take within Mega-City One, including the show's new tone and when we can expect to see the series hit the screen.

Rebellion CEO Jason Kingsley on JUDGE DREDD: MEGA-CITY ONE:

Dark fantasy elements are one area that would be great to explore. The show will combine the macabre with the insane and the light-hearted. It's a big place, after all, with 400 million stories to tell.

Long-form storytelling makes showing Mega-City One and its inhabitants much easier. Trying to fit all of that into a two-hour movie is very hard.

Kingsley on when we can expect to see JUDGE DREDD: MEGA-CITY ONE:

My best guess if that it's at least two years away. But we're so early in the process that things could happen a bit faster, or much more slowly.

It's worth noting that supposedly Kingsley dipped and dodged questions about whether or not Karl Urban was, in fact, returning to the role. I guess at this point we'll just have to hope and pray that a deal can be worked out between all the involved parties.
