Karl Urban says it’s likely we’ll see a Dredd ‘Origins’ storyline

Last Updated on July 22, 2021

I think it's pretty safe to say that anyone who saw 2012's ultra-badass DREDD wants to see more of the Judge in action. The big question is: will we get it? Karl Urban, the star of DREDD, has been very vocal about wanting to step back into the boots of the character, and even producer Adi Shankar has expressed his desire to bring DREDD back to the screen, sharing back in May that 'there are conversations going on…but there's no f**king script!'. But now Urban has shared that there is an idea brewing, and it's based on the "Origins" storyline from the comics.

Urban recently made an appearance at Chicago Comic-Con, where he revealed that now there's a possibility that another film in the DREDD universe may be coming, and it will reveal a bit more backstory on the character. Says Urban:

"Why yes, there is a definite possibility. But, it is more likely that we will do the origins story with Dredd trekking through the cursed earth to find the first Chief Judge Fargo."

"Origins" is a 23-installment storyline from the mid-2000s, going into the back-story of how the Judges came to be in the first place, and also finds Dredd heading out beyond the walls of Mega City One to retrieve First Chief Fargo's stasis pod from the New Mutant Army. It is also where we learned that Dredd was cloned from Fargo. You may recall that in the 1995 Stallone-led JUDGE DREDD, Fargo was played by Max Von Sydow. While the film may not exactly be a prequel, elements of the story could take place before DREDD.

It has to be noted that nothing official has come down that a sequel or prequel will happen, only that it is being discussed. Urban's enthusiasm to bring DREDD back is very evident, but it doesn't indicate any actual developments and until we hear otherwise we'll just have to say that this is all speculation. Still, we're hoping to see another DREDD film or even a DREDD TV series, as Shankar has expressed interest in doing. We'll just have to wait it out and see if anything official comes down.

We'll keep you posted!
