Lakeith Stanfield Death Note

Actor Lakeith Stanfield really caught my attention last year with his performances in GET OUT and DEATH NOTE, so I'm glad to hear that he has signed on to appear in THE GIRL IN THE SPIDER'S WEB, Sony's attempt at relaunching their THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO franchise seven years after the release of David Fincher's DRAGON TATTOO.

EVIL DEAD 2013 / DON'T BREATHE director Fede Alvarez is at the helm of THE GIRL IN THE SPIDER'S WEB, working from a screenplay he wrote with Steven Knight and Jay Basu. With this film, Sony is skipping over author Stieg Larsson's DRAGON TATTOO sequels THE GIRL WHO PLAYED WITH FIRE and THE GIRL WHO KICKED THE HORNET'S NEST. THE GIRL IN THE SPIDER'S WEB was a continuation novel written by David Lagercrantz. (Larsson had passed away before his trilogy was even published.)

Claire Foy and Sverrir Gudnason will be playing Lisbeth Salander and Mikael Blomquist, roles that were filled by Rooney Mara and Daniel Craig in Fincher's film. Also in the cast are Claes Bang as one of the antagonists, Sylvia Hoeks as Lisbeth's evil twin, and Cameron Britton as a computer expert Lisbeth reaches out to when she needs assistance.

Stanfield's character is an NSA security expert who is tracking Lisbeth.

THE GIRL IN THE SPIDER'S WEB tells the following story:

She is the girl with the dragon tattoo — a genius hacker and uncompromising misfit. He is a crusading journalist whose championing of the truth often brings him to the brink of prosecution.

Late one night, Blomkvist receives a phone call from a source claiming to have information vital to the United States. The source has been in contact with a young female superhacker — a hacker resembling someone Blomkvist knows all too well. The implications are staggering. Blomkvist, in desperate need of a scoop for Millennium, turns to Salander for help. She, as usual, has her own agenda. The secret they are both chasing is at the center of a tangled web of spies, cybercriminals, and governments around the world, and someone is prepared to kill to protect it…

Filming begins this month, with the movie scheduled to reach theatres on October 19, 2018.
