M. Night Shyamalan's sci-fi epic After Earth lands a viral website & teaser trailer

Jul. 16, 2012by: Jake Dee

Before I continue with this story, allow me to echo what my man E.Dubb called out two weeks ago. Cypher Raige? That's the character Will Smith is playing in M. Night Shyamalan's AFTER EARTH? Cypher f*ckin' Raige? Damn, that has to be the worst handle since Castor Troy. Good grief!

As I try to get over this calamity, I'll have you know a new viral website and teaser trailer for AFTER EARTH have crossed the wire and we have the link and video below to prove it. Not sure how thrilled you are about AFTER EARTH, as Shyamalan has seemingly gotten worse with each directorial effort. Could this be worse than THE LAST AIRBENDER though? Tough to imagine...

Starring Will Smith, Jaden Smith, Isabelle Fuhrman, Zoë Kravitz (below) and Sophie Okonedo:

In After Earth, one thousand years after cataclysmic events forced humanity’s escape from Earth, Nova Prime has become mankind’s new home. Legendary General Cypher Raige (played by Will Smith) returns from an extended tour of duty to his estranged family, ready to be a father to his 13-year-old son, Kitai (played by Jaden Smith). When an asteroid storm damages Cypher and Kitai’s craft, they crash-land on a now unfamiliar and dangerous Earth. As his father lies dying in the cockpit, Kitai must trek across the hostile terrain to recover their rescue beacon. His whole life, Kitai has wanted nothing more than to be a soldier like his father. Today, he gets his chance.

If you dig what you see, feel free to mosey on over to the official After Earth website.

Extra Tidbit: Worse screen name than Cypher Raige?

Shyamalan and company need to provide more preview beyond this trailer. The teaser did not get a person excited for the movie. The narration is straight out of an educational film, and it does not indicate the tense drama from the plot synopsis. Also, Will Smith's face never appears in the trailer, and his face would excite some potential After Earth customers. I am not one of them. However, some like Smith's constant sci-fi endeavors (e.g. the recent Men in Black III). Shyamalan could also

However, some like Smith's constant sci-fi endeavors (e.g. the recent Men in Black III). Shyamalan could also present his name in the trailer; he has a good name with some sci-fi fans. Also, the trailer might indicate why the Raige history is a Facebook page and timeline, but I missed the reason for that choice after two viewings. An effective trailer presents unanswered questions (that the story will answer once a person buys a ticket), but it does not confuse a potential viewer too much. Is the Facebook page product placement financing Shymalan's project? Does the FB page lead to another FB page one thousand years from now? I am not sure.
After Earth needs to tell fans more about itself. And, it needs to look more exciting than The Happening, The Village, or Lady in the Water. As happens with M. Night, his films need sometimes less confusion and more action, and this trailer does too.
