Maika Monroe joins Chloe Grace Moretz for invasion thriller The 5th Wave

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

Back in April we learned that Sony Pictures had inked a deal with CARRIE actress Chloe Grace Moretz for the adaptation of Rick Yancey's THE 5TH WAVE, a new alien invasion thriller to be helmed by J. Blakeson (THE DISAPPEARANCE OF ALICE CREED). Now The Wrap is reporting that Maika Monroe has joined the ever-growing cast that also includes Nick Robinson and Alex Roe. The Wrap is also reporting that THE LAST DAYS ON MARS star Liev Schreiber is in final talks for a villain role.

Here's a brief synopsis of the film:

In this tense thriller, four waves of increasingly deadly attacks have left most of Earth decimated. Against a backdrop of fear and distrust, 16-year-old Cassie is on the run, desperately trying to save her younger brother. As she prepares for the inevitable and lethal 5th wave, Cassie meets a young man who may become her final hope.

For a bit more detail, here's the synopsis for Yancy's book:

After the 1st wave, only darkness remains. After the 2nd, only the lucky escape. And after the 3rd, only the unlucky survive. After the 4th wave, only one rule applies: trust no one. Now, it's the dawn of the 5th wave, and on a lonely stretch of highway, Cassie runs from Them. The beings who only look human, who roam the countryside killing anyone they see. Who have scattered Earth's last survivors. To stay alone is to stay alive, Cassie believes, until she meets Evan Walker. Beguiling and mysterious, Evan Walker may be Cassie's only hope for rescuing her brother–or even saving herself. But Cassie must choose: between trust and despair, between defiance and surrender, between life and death. To give up or to get up.

Moretz plays Cassie Sullivan, one of the last surviving humans left on a planet savaged by waves of alien attacks. When her little brother goes missing, she journeys to find him, meeting a mysterious young man named Evan Walker (Roe) along the way.

Robinson's Ben Parish takes Cassie's little brother under his wing, while Monroe's Ringer is another member of his team, tough and capable with a gun.

Susannah Grant is penning the screenplay; Graham King will produce through GK Films along with Tobey Maguire and Matthew Plouffe through his Material Pictures.
