Maleficent director Robert Stromberg is going on Safari

Last Updated on August 5, 2021

Oscar-winning production designer Robert Stromberg has just wrapped up his directorial debut, MALEFICENT starring Angelina Jolie, and it would appear as though he enjoyed the experience. So much so that he’s already got his next gig behind the camera lined up, a high-concept flick called SAFARI.

As is usually the case with something freshly announced, little is known about this project at the moment. However, Variety describes it as “a large-scale adventure pic in the vein of “Jurassic Park” and “Avatar” that Stromberg has committed to direct.”

Stromberg won one of his Oscars for the work he did on AVATAR, so that’s a genre he knows well. Must say, I’m thoroughly intrigued to find out more about this one.

Stromberg is keeping busy in other areas too; he recently co-created “The Third Floor,” a production banner he and his partners see as “an alternative to studio development — a place where filmmakers can come to get their CG and live-action ideas off the ground just enough to entice studio partners for financing and distribution.” The Los Angeles-based company will use an inhouse fund to finance development, including a couple of projects already in the works.

Sounds like the place to be! We’ll let you know when we learn more about SAFARI.
