Mortal Kombat reboot an R-rated Avengers featuring over the top gore

Last Updated on July 31, 2021

It was just yesterday that we shared with guys some choice bits from an interview screenwriter Oren Uziel had with Collider about the new GOD PARTICLE film and it's connection to the CLOVERFIELD universe.

Today we have further info the guys over at Collider were able to squeeze out of the man, but this time it was in reference to his work on the upcoming MORTAL KOMBAT reboot!

Uziel said the film, which is to be produced by James Wan and directed by Simon McQuoid, was going to be an R-rated version of THE AVENGERS featuring over-the-top gore. While Uziel isn't sure the film is still happening he did go a bit more in-depth on what he wrote.

Screenwriter Oren Uziel on MORTAL KOMBAT:

I know that it was going to be—it’s almost like if you took The Avengers, or if you took a storyline like that and set it in a sort of hard-R, over-the-top violence and hard-edged world of Mortal Kombat. It was a little bit like that, it was a little bit like a Wanted-type story that brought together a bunch of these characters and just pulled zero punches, and had a tone that was still fun but very dark.”

While I'm just as excited as the rest of you for the hard-R and the "over-the-top gore", the thing that strikes me the deepest is the "tone that was still fun but very dark."

That is what I would like to see brought to the screen as far too many reboots either go the borderline parody version of its source material (STAR TREK and 21 JUMP STREET) or take the sh*t way too damn seriously (every DC reboot).

I hope this new reboot of MORTAL KOMBAT hits screens, and soon. This could be something truly badass and I'm glad to know James Wan, in some capacity, is helping out with the flick.

We'll let you know when we hear more about the MORTAL KOMBAT reboot here at AITH. Until then make sure to let us know what you think of the reboot on Facebook, Twitter, and/or Instagram!
