MTV prepares to turn Wes Craven's Scream into a TV series

06.04.2012by: Andy Madrzak

Can't get enough of the SCREAM franchise? You're in luck! Sick of Ghostface? Too bad. Why? Because it looks like MTV is moving into production on a weekly series based on Wes Craven's slashers. TVLine broke the news that former MTV execs Tony DiSanto and Liz Gateley are overseeing the project under their DiGa production shingle. No word yet on whether Craven, Kevin Williamson or anyone else involved in the theatrical flicks will take part in the show. The search is now on for a writer to pen the pilot.

You don't need to be a rocket scientist to figure out that the success of that TEEN WOLF series was probably a major factor in greenlighting this one. That, plus the hundreds of millions of dollars the SCREAM franchise raked in over the years.

Extra Tidbit: Do you think an MTV-produced SCREAM TV series can work or would your rather the franchise stick to movies?

First and foremost I LOVE Scream. I love all the movies (yes that includes 3 and 4 even with their faults) and would LOVE more Scream but I'd rather another movie. To be fair the format is a 50/50 on working on tv. On the negative, surely it will play like a movie stretched out too long even if it was over say just 12 episodes? As mentioned below Harper's Island worked well as a slasher tv show and I really enjoyed that. If they do a normal season of 22 or so episodes it will pad it out too

As mentioned below Harper's Island worked well as a slasher tv show and I really enjoyed that. If they do a normal season of 22 or so episodes it will pad it out too much and will die a death worse than Casey Becker. Plus I fear a distinct lack of violence and too much teen angst. On the positive the fact each movie had different killers (with 3rd linking the first as a mastermind - good to introduce a multi season villain twist) and copycats etc... so different killers and continuing protaganists each series wouldn't be a stretch for the world of Scream. Though I hope they make it separate from Sidney Prescott, Gale and Dewey and the town of Woodsboro. Mostly due to me not wanting them recast. They could also be taking a leaf out of American Horror story and have completely different characters and storyline each series?
Until more details are released I'm very dubious. I could've actually seen the Exorcist working more as a show than this.

How???

Teen Wolf was easy, plenty of shows about vampires, werewolves and ghost have come and gone with different stories. To center the story around a group of teens gettings killed off by a masked killer is kind of lame. It would be like watching a really long and boring version of scream 4...

Not a good week to be a horror fan . We hear about an '' EXORCIST '' TV adaption , which luckily fell through , and now this joyous news . There is not a hope in Hell this is going to work .

No. No. No! NO! NOOOOOO!!!!

I adore the Scream franchise, and I just don't see this ending up well.

I would LOVE a Scream TV show, but not on MTV, for Christ's sake. I fear a sparkly Ghostface who falls for his victims and phone conversations that include the word "like" too many times.
