When someone mentions the words 'Japanese monster movie' more often than not, the next thought in almost everyone's mind is Godzilla (or Gojira for Japanese movie fans). True, the big dude is the very symbol of Japanese B-movies, but what about guys like Gamera?
You know, Gamera. The giant turtle dude that levitates, breathes fire and can probably stomp the crap out of the Ninja Turtles? Well, since the big G is in retirement for the time being, it's time for the lesser G to step up, which is what's happening over in Japan, as a new Gamera movie has been in the works for some time, and over at the film's official site, Kadokawa Daiei Pictures Inc. has posted the trailer for GAMERA: CHIISAKI YUSHA-TACHI (don't ask me what that means in English).
If I could understand Japanese, it'd probably be easier to understand what's going on, but from what I gather, some kid finds a turtle egg, out hatches a normal looking CGI turtle, which soon grows to levitate and scare the crap out of the kid's neighbours. Eventually, the turtle grows so big that the townsfolk are obviously distressed, and want to get rid of it (much to the dismay of the young boy who found the turtle). However, a giant bearded dragon arrives to cause havoc, and so it's up to Gamera to bust out his spinning shell of justice and put the hurt to the rival reptile. Fireballs and crushed buildings ensue.
It looks to be more of a family-oriented sort of monster flick, as Gamera looks darn cute in his mini form and has a lot of shots with the boy, but the film soon switches up to the classic guy in suit mode for the big fight. Since I can't read Japanese, I couldn't tell when the film comes out (props to The Sandman for figuring out the Japanese release date as April 29th). Click here to see the trailer. Gamera is good!!
