New Universal Monster movie being written by Fargo creator Noah Hawley

Last Updated on July 22, 2021

As we already know, Universal’s revamping of its “Monsters” library is fully underway. With DRACULA UNTOLD a few weeks from opening and a reboot of THE MUMMY coming in 2016 (which Alex Kurtzman will direct), the studio is attempting to give classic characters like The Mummy, Dracula, Wolfman and Frankenstein’s Monster their own Marvel-like shared universe. Hey, everyone else is doing it, so why can’t these guys?

Yesterday it was quietly revealed a new player has joined the massive undertaking. Noah Hawley, who created, wrote and produced FX’s terrific “Fargo” TV series, is reportedly penning “an untitled project at Universal that will be part of that studio’s classic monster franchise push,” according to Deadline.com.

This is really cool news, as it makes clear Universal is thinking a bit outside the box with this enterprise. “Fargo” really was fantastic – smart, funny, twisted and suspenseful – and it nabbed Hawley and FX an Outstanding Miniseries Emmy last month.

Hopefully more details will emerge from the shadows soon. I’m personally very eager to learn which Monster Hawley will be reviving, and have a very tenuous hope Universal has a solid plan in place for these beloved characters.
