New viral images focus on Carrie White's backstory

10.10.2012by: Ike Oden

The upcoming remake/re-adaptation of Stephen King's CARRIE is garnering mixed reactions from horror fans. Well, "mixed" being everyone agreeing its sort of pointless despite a great cast (Chloe Moretz, Julianne Moore, Judy Greer) and talented director (Kimberly Peirce). However you may feel about the idea, the new film seems to be trying to deliniate itself from the Brian De Palma original by pushing some viral images culled straight from King's original novel.

First, we have a faux-newspaper clipping. The caption accompanying it reads:

This article was found in the Chamberlain archives. It was printed over a decade ago. That would have made Carrie at least five years old. Is it possible that telepathic powers of that magnitude can develop at such a young age?

Next, we have the self explanatory:

Creative writing assignment: untitled poem, Carrie White.

Part of the greatness of King's novel is the structure of it. In an inspired choice, the author breaks up the main plot with chapters containing fake documents (such as these) linked to Carrie's backstory and the aftermath of "The Black Prom." If the film is really steering toward these details, director Kimberly Peirce may indeed deliver on her previous promise to "re-adapt the text" of the novel, rather than ape the original. Still, the question lingers: will that be enough to distinguish it from De Palma's version? Talk back with your opinion below...

Extra Tidbit: Must... resist... urge... to make... Julianne Moore (above)... dirty pillows... joke...
