Nicolas Winding Refn’s Maniac Cop remake taps Ed Brubaker to script

Last Updated on July 22, 2021

It was more than two years ago when we first heard rumblings that DRIVE and ONLY GOD FORGIVES director Nicolas Winding Refn was set to team up with legendary genre director William Lustig for a remake of Lustig's cult classic MANIAC COP, and in the many months since then we haven't heard too much about that project. While things have been pretty quiet on the proposed film, that certainly doesn't mean it was DOA as today we have a significant update that should delight fans. And much like they couldn't keep Officer Matt Cordell down, the MANIAC COP remake has risen with a vengeance!

Screen Daily is reporting that Paris-based sales and production powerhouse Wild Bunch has unveiled a packed Cannes slate which includes the MANIAC COP remake, adding that Ed Brubaker is set to pen the script. Brubaker most recently came up with the concept and story for the blockbuster hit CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER, so his addition to the MANIAC COP remake team is a welcome one, indeed!

The production is spearheaded by Danish filmmaker Nicolas Winding Refn, who is producing alongside William Lustig, director of the original, and Wild Bunch. The director will be announced in Cannes.

I don't know about you, but I'm pretty excited for a MANIAC COP remake, especially with this level of talent involved. Who would you like to see take the helm on this project? Better yet, who would you like to see tackle the role of the titular madman? Hit us up with some suggestions in the comments section below!
