I wonder if Disney regrets the dumpage...

Five weeks ago we let you know OBLIVION (once known as HORIZONS), the epic sci-fi film from TRON: LEGACY director Joseph Kosinski, had moved from Disney to Universal. At that time, none other than Tommy Cruise was in talks to star. Well folks, it's official...the aging star will indeed cruise into OBLIVION.

Word comes from Deadline, which claims the film will begin production this October under a $100 million budget.

Originally penned by William Monahan (THE DEPARTED, LONDON BOULEVARD), and since redone by Karl Gajdusek - OBLIVION (HORIZONS) centers on a battle-damaged soldier who, assigned to a desolate planet after a court-martial, patrols the bleak landscape in an effort to destroy the last vestiges of a primitive alien race. When a mysterious traveler arrives unexpectedly, their lives become inextricably linked as they are forced to question everything they know about this world and themselves.

Cruise will play the soldier who's stuck alone on the planet, repairing the drones that patrol and destroy a savage alien life form. He encounters a beautiful woman who crashes in a craft, and their experience together forces him to question his world view.

OBLIVION will be the next film Cruise shoots after ROCK OF AGES.

Cruise's ROCK OF AGES co-star Malin Akerman!

Extra Tidbit: You think Cruise can still carry a $100 million movie...one that's not a sequel or a remake?
