Oldboy NOT remake

11.21.2008by: Ammon Gilbert
It seems that not many people are stoked on the Steven Spielberg / Will Smith team-up of OLDBOY. The flick just scored a new writer to take the project to the big screen, but according to Smith, their version will NOT be a remake of Chan-wook Park’s film!

FilmSchoolRejects recently chatted with Smith, who had this to say about the new OLDBOY: We’re looking at that right now. Not the film though, it’s the original source material. There’s the original comics of ‘Oldboy’ that they made the first film from. And that’s what we’re working from, not an adaptation of the film...

And there you have it. While it hasn't been made official yet, Smith also told them that he will, for sure, be starring in the new movie. And Spielberg’s involvement... not sure yet, other than he was buying the rights to the original graphic novel, and not the film itself, as we all had previously thought.

So, a new take on the original source material? Hey... it could work! I haven't read the graphic novel, but it makes me feel better to know that it won't be a remake, per se, more like a retake of the comic.

Does this change YOUR opinion whether the Smith / Spielberg OLDBOY should happen? Spit some bullets below, and be sure to check out the original scoop by clicking HERE.

Sounds like nothing more than an excuse to dumb down the violence and extreme content of the original. I'm guessing the daughter bit won't be part of their adaptation. Nor will being a good movie be a part of it, either. Stick to WWII, Steven.

This news make me hate this project a lot less. I'm still not entirely sure how I feel about the Will Smith rumors, but I'll remain neutral until I know a little more.

That always changes my opinion!

A lot of people refuse to see the difference between "remake" and "alternate adaptation". This annoys the hell out of me, because there's a huge difference.

For example: The recent Amityville was a remake... and it was awful. They strayed a LOT further from the source material than the first adaptation did. It was obvious that their only intention was retelling the MOVIE, not the book. Had they adapted the book more closely, I would have enjoyed it more, since the book is what supposedly

(For the record, I do know it was a hoax... but still...)

And these recent remakes of Asian films lately have mostly been pretty pointless, since they pretty much make the exact same film, just with American actors. I worried that this would be the case with an Oldboy remake... which I wouldn't want to see.

*fists to the skies* THANK the gods!!

Stephen Spielberg is, WITHOUT EXCEPTION, one of my favorite directors ever (and this includes his films with Tom Cruise - whom I also have great admiration for). Will Smith is a big, big, biggie favorite actor of mine. And the two of them, working together? FLIPPIN' AWESOME.

Then I hear they'll BOTH...be working (to whatever degrees)...on a REMAKE...of a film from SEVERAL YEARS AGO...and another country/language.

I kind of went apeshit, because

I kind of went apeshit, because that just didn't seem like...well, "them."

But now that I know the details of this is they'll be re-ADAPTING, not re-MAKING, a story - now THAT is good news. I'll welcome that, happily.

That said, I'm still looking forward to THE LODGER and THE BIRDS, because at least those will be doing the same thing, and not daring to RE-MAKE Hitchcock films (which is never a good idea...PSYCHO anyone?).

Good to know someone has sense and is going back to source material instead of just taking a movie and redoing it. I'm more open to that but still don't see it comparing to Chan-wook Park's movie :P
