Out Of The Grave: This Week on The Walking Dead (Episode 14 / March 17, 2013)

EPISODE 14: Prey

THE HOOK: With Hershel’s farm overrun, Rick and company are on the move again. They come across a prison which Rick feels would be perfect…once it’s purged of walkers. But the dead aren’t the only danger lurking in the shadows.

THE LOWDOWN: (The following column contains MAJOR SPOILERS, so I don’t recommend reading this if you haven’t watched this episode). So much for negotiations…or the facade of being Mr. Nice guy, the Governor’s all business now baby, and that business is revenge and death dealing. Watching him assemble his little torture porn dungeon room actually made me feel like he’s finally becoming the villain I know and love. At first, seeing as how it’s meant for Michonne, I started to wonder if we might actually see some of the things that transpire between those two characters in the comics actually happen, but after the episode ended—I’ll come back to that—I let the notion slide. Clearly he’s still pissed about Penny, so I can’t believe Milton would say what’s done is done, it doesn’t matter. I honestly thought the Governor was going to rip out his lungs right then and there. Not the brightest fella in the mix that Milton.

Now speaking of Milton not being too bright, telling Andrea the truth was both good and bad. Clearly it was good because he knew she’d do something about it, but if you don’t have the balls to let her do what’s right (like take that damn shot), why bother? They were boys before the shit hit the fan, I get that and I love that he’s willing to stay on board a sinking ship, but again, why rock the damn thing if you’re going to drown anyway—and it doesn’t exactly confirm this, but I know for a fact Milton was the one to unleash hell upon those walkers. I think we all can agree there, but at what cost? I like Milton, the dumb bastard, but I don’t see him getting out of this alive.

Milton’s not the only one to have a crisis of conscience, Tyreese comes to his senses as well (I knew he would at some point). The inner turmoil fighting between him and his stooge was funny as hell, I said from the start it’s going to Tyreese and his sister, the other two are walker food. It won’t be by Tyreese’s hands (as we saw tonight), but it’s only a matter of time and I for one will giggle my ass off when it happens. I was also very touched by the look back into Andrea and Michonne’s stay out in the wilds together. Again, we’re seeing a very human side of Michonne and I like that. The story about her two walkers differs from the show to the comic, but I liked the way it’s played. Yes, they serve as walker repellant, but it was also a form of poetic justice. Love it.

THE WALKING DEAD SEASON 3’s fourteenth episode covered a lot of ground within the enemy camp, and it’s nice to see the Governor’s got some wolves in his henhouse to contend with. It becomes clear that he’s willing to do whatever it takes in that regard as he goes after Andrea. I’m glad she finally opens her damn eyes but talk about the worst hiding place ever—and how about the prize behind door number one. I thought for sure she was going to get bit when she re-opened that door, but I knew the Governor would get out. That said, I really dug the ending, but thought for sure she was going to make it—the Rick close encounter was a nice touch that really added to the moment. Coming back to my previous statement, poor Andrea now sits in Michonne’s chair and I’m anxious to see if she gets out. Just two episodes left.

ZOMBIE KILL OF THE WEEK: The kill of the night goes to Andrea and her walker threesome in the woods. You got game, girl.

BLOOD AND GORE: We get all kinds of zombie kills, a zombie pyre and the promise of nasty torture to come.

WHOSE HEAD BELONGS IN THE GOV’S FISHTANK: Milton. Like I said, I love the guy and all, but damn boy, choose a side and make a stand already or you’re going to have your ass handed to both you and the walkers.

COOLEST SCENE: For me it was the Governor assembling his torture room. Not because I enjoy torture, but because it marked his point of no return. He’s out for blood and now he doesn’t care who knows it, even his own people.
