EPISODE 15: This Sorrowful Life

THE HOOK: With Hershel's farm overrun, Rick and company are on the move again. They come across a prison which Rick feels would be perfect...once it's purged of walkers. But the dead aren't the only danger lurking in the shadows.

THE LOWDOWN: (The following column contains MAJOR SPOILERS, so I don't recommend reading this if you haven't watched this episode). Well here we are, down to the last two episodes, so at the risk of sounding repetitive, this article will contain spoilers so continue at your own risk. Still with me? Good. I loved the opening conversation between Rick and Merle, he calls Rick’s conscience out and it’s beautiful. Rick was making the wrong call, he knew it, Merle knew it, hell, everyone knew it, including Lori who comes back and gives him a much needed moment of clarity…for all the good it did.

Merle knows how to play not just the game, but each and every player in it. We all knew he was out for himself from the start. Sure, he wanted to be with Daryl, but he’s been coming to the slow realization that Daryl’s rooted in with the group. I truly believe Merle could have endured and earned his place like Michonne did—despite Glenn telling Daryl it wouldn’t happen—but I can’t blame him for seizing the opportunity with Michonne when it presented itself. That said, Merle knows the Governor better than anyone and told Hershel straight up how this game would play out, so I have to wonder why he bothered acting on the Michonne thing when he knew damn well he’d get shot in the face after handing her over.

Merle’s chat with Michonne felt as real as any conversation between two people in this series thus far. Here we have two outsiders, two lone wolves with no reservations as to how the world is and how people are faring, and despite being at odds with one another there’s a measure of respect between them. I didn’t think Michonne would be able to talk him down, honestly, I thought she’d have to kill him. Merle isn’t the devil he appears to be, or wants people to think he is and we finally see that tonight. I loved his walker plan, but I felt he ran a little headlong into that fight. Personally, I think he could kick the Governor’s ass, one on one, but we all knew that wouldn’t happen.

THE WALKING DEAD SEASON 3's fifteenth episode was eventful, but did feel a bit like filler before the main event. The whole thing with Glenn asking Maggie to marry him was heartwarming (I just hope she doesn’t ask him where he got the ring), and I dug Rick’s “greater good” speech, but it was the ending that really shook me up. Poor Daryl. I knew nothing would happen to him, I even believed for a while there that he and Merle might battle it out for Michonne’s life, but no, Daryl got something much worse…having to see his brother turned and feeding on some random carcass. We knew we’d lose Merle, but damn, going out like that is going to mess Daryl up big time. I envision the Governor attacking the prison much like he does in the comics, but I also want to see a battle royal between him and Rick. Thing is, Daryl’s definitely gonna want a piece of that action. Season finale next week folks, how do you think this will play out?

ZOMBIE KILL OF THE WEEK: Michonne manages to kill a walker with a damn wire while tied up, taking its head clean off. She really is queen of the apocalypse.

BLOOD AND GORE: Merle leads a small army of walkers to meet the Governor’s crew which results in mucho carnage and mayhem.

WHOSE HEAD BELONGS IN THE GOV'S FISHTANK: Rick. Don’t get me wrong, I’m glad he got off the crazy train, but it took far too long for him to come to his damn senses about this Michonne trade, and telling Merle about it was the absolute worst play possible.

COOLEST SCENE: There’s nothing “cool” about how tonight’s episode comes to a close, but if you want a powerful scene, this is it. Seeing Merle’s eyes when he rises and looks at Daryl is enough to chill just about anyone to the bone.

FINAL VERDICT:

TELL US WHAT YOU THOUGHT OF THIS EPISODE BELOW!

Extra Tidbit: Will the Governor live or die? Will Woodbury burn? Who will walk away from this war? I’d like to say one more week and it will all be revealed, but I get the feeling there’s going to be one hell of a cliff hanger.

It's funny how quickly our emotions get tugged in this show. Merle's salvation was a surprise, and I can't help but fear for Andrea's life while wanting her to die all season. This will be an insane finale I'm thinking.

I can't believe I shed tears over Merle, but his sacrifice was something that demanded respect. The worst part about it was brought up on Talking Dead, pretty much saying that Daryl will never know his brother was a hero and that's sad.

I think Merle started to realize how his actions affected those around him when he saw Daryl's scars. He didnt think he would be accepted and I don't think could forgive himself for the terrible things he has done. It was also an eye-opener for him when Michonne pointed out that he only became a killer after he met The Gov. I think that's why he let Michonne go as a small bit of redemption for him for the world of hurt he has caused people. Merle was a great character and sad to see him go.

Cool episode, sad to see Merle go as he would have been a great asset to the group. Ultimately I'm not surprised though, as I wouldn't be surprised to see them kill Daryl as both of them aren't in the comics. I also thought more would happen tonight, because, like you said, there's still a lot of ground to cover in the finale. It's funny, despite having read all the comics, I have no idea what to expect from next week.

Daryl is way too popular for them kill off anytime soon. I hear they want to write Daryl into the comics but they cant for some legal reasons.

I agree, Daryl can't and won't be gone anytime soon.

I was hoping for a bit more substance in this episode as there are lots of loose ends to tie up and, well, only one episode left to do them in so I'm with you in believing we're going to have cliff hangers by show's end. Either that, or a quick fight that we can miss if we blink. The suspense is killing me though, so I guess AMC is doing their job right.

Merle's sacrifice was really a surprise to me. As I felt he despised the group but really only stuck around for his brother. But in the last two episodes, he was probably making the most sense out of the group. He saw the carnage the Governor caused and how he manipulated the stronger men around him to be his army. Merle knew he was far from perfect, but he wasn't the devil (as he put it). It was very emotional to see Darryl stab his brother repeatedly in the face..... Darryl found a family in

Darryl found a family in the group, would fight and keep the weaker people alive. Merle never wanted any part of that and grew vengeful, grew disconnected from the group, the Governor's group and his brother, ultimately knowing he had no family to go to.

Well let me be the first to admit I was wrong, I thought for sure Merle was a spy in the prison and the whole thing was an elaborate plot by the governor. That said the previews for next week look awesome with a true battle taking place at the prison with the tower exploding. So torn next week between this finale and Game of Thrones, thank you to whoever invented DVR.

I thought for sure Merle was a spy too. And are you fucking kidding me about Game of Thrones and Walking Dead being on at the same time!? That shit's just cold.

To be honest, I actually didn't completely expect Merle to go. After not having him around for the greater part of season one and him being completely missing from season two, I expected they would keep him around at least until the next season. I even expected him to go through some kind of transformation that Daryl went through. I think Merle is actually one of the few characters on the show that was around in the beginning that never really changed as a character. But this was an episode I

I think Merle is actually one of the few characters on the show that was around in the beginning that never really changed as a character. But this was an episode I really, really liked. One of the great things about the show is the way every character has change, the way they are humanized and how their they can be molded and broken down to reveal things their character types might never reveal. Merle was the most relatable here, which is fitting I guess. For once, I felt a genuine affinity for him because it was so evident that he wasn't really who he brought himself out to be. He acted big, but we could see that there was something deeper there, something not so bad. The ending was killer though. I never really cared for Merle, as it was meant to be, but seeing Daryl's reaction to his zombie brother was heartbreaking. We've seen a lot of change in Daryl, but this was the first time, I think, that we saw him genuinely heartbroken. I can only imagine how this will effect him in next week's episode and the next season.

It was surprisingly sad to see Merle go, but he did go out a champ at least. Lots of emotions, but I'm thinking next week will be far more emotional.

I thought last night's episode was pretty great, with major props to the whole Merle/Michonne dialogues. Now it's a matter of figuring out who's gonna get taken out next episode. Why do I have a bad feeling they're going to off Daryl?

I really hope Daryl doesn't go, but anyone's fair game at this point, with the exception of Rick and Michonne.
