EPISODE 16: Welcome to the Tombs

THE HOOK: With Hershel’s farm overrun, Rick and company are on the move again. They come across a prison which Rick feels would be perfect…once it’s purged of walkers. But the dead aren’t the only danger lurking in the shadows.

The following contains MAJOR SPOILERS, so I don’t recommend reading this if you haven’t watched this episode

THE LOWDOWN: Without a doubt this was the best opening scene of the whole series. I knew Milton would go and I was sure it would be at the Governor’s hands, but I didn’t see it coming at us like this. I thought he’d save Andrea, but we’ll come back to that. I did however love the Gov’s explanation of why he kept the heads and his catchy phrase, “Kill or you die, or die and you kill.” I just wish the entire episode could have maintained this fevered pace and tension. There were some cool highlights to be sure, but as far as finale’s go, I didn’t feel much happened and/or got resolved which was a bit of a bummer.

I liked that Daryl understood Merle made a sacrifice for them, as it was unclear if he would. Rick and Michonne have the “I’m cool that you considered handing me over to that psycho” talk, and it went pretty well considering. Just another reason why Michonne is awesome. We don’t get much out of the rest of the group, save for Carl, who’s pissed off. I like how they made it look and feel like they were abandoning the prison. The Governor does his best to rouse his peeps into kill mode, and I gotta say, they hit that prison with some heavy duty firepower destroying everything in their path. I couldn’t help but wonder what both groups could have accomplished had they just joined forces and decided to kick ass. Sadly, we’ll never know. The whole prison incursion/ambush/shootout, whatever you want to call it, was over in the blink of an eye. Talk about an anti-climactic showdown.

During this battle, Carl shoots some kid in the face despite him trying to give up his weapon. My two cents? I agreed with him one hundred percent. Why take chances at this point? The Governor, and just about everyone else, has proven they can’t be trusted. That kid wouldn’t have gotten half of those words in had it been me. Now speaking of shooting people in the face, we quickly find out the Governor is about done with failure and losing…so he guns down three quarters of Woodbury like dogs in the street. The look on Martinez’s face was priceless. Him and the other guy give each other that, “we didn’t see shit” look, and pray to god he buys it. Not sure where the three of them went, but I’m damn sure it was one hell of an uncomfortable silence filled ride.

THE WALKING DEAD SEASON 3’s finale was, in my opinion, underwhelming to say the least. Last week I couldn’t help but think there was too much left unsaid to cram into one final episode, cliff hanger or no cliff hanger. Like I said, the battle at the prison was pathetic, the Governor loses his mind and then rides off into the darkness. Rick and crew save the rest of Woodbury, bring them back to the prison and Tyreese and his sister finally “get it”. Yes, Andrea dies. Yes, it’s sad, but that’s about all that really happens tonight. I loved Carl’s talk with Rick about the shooting, he was making all kinds of sense and spelled it out bluntly, but accurately. I was surprised they decided to stay at the prison as I was surprised by what happened the Governor. But I’ll be honest, I was expecting more from tonight. I love the show and can’t wait for October, but I just wish this season would’ve gone out with more of a bang (no pun intended, Andrea).

ZOMBIE KILL OF THE WEEK: Michonne did a double head decapitation that more than qualifies.

BLOOD AND GORE: Lots of walkers and people kick the bucket tonight. Andrea’s bite was pretty gross too.

WHOSE HEAD BELONGS IN THE GOV’S FISHTANK: It’s hard to say, but I’ll go with Andrea, simply because she really took her sweet ass time getting those damn pliers. I’d have dislocated both feet if that’s what it took, but I’d have gotten the hell outta that chair and smoked Milton before he turned.

COOLEST SCENE: For me it was when Carl unloaded on Rick and spelt out exactly why shooting first and asking questions later was the right thing to do. Carl’s done f*cking around.

FINAL VERDICT:
