Scott’s answer on whether Deckard is a replicant or not in Blade Runner

Last Updated on August 5, 2021

The man behind it all, Ridley Scott, has finally spilled the goods on the question BLADE RUNNER fans have long argued: Is Harrison Ford’s replicant-hunting Rick Deckard a replicant himself? Okay, I’m only going to tell you guys this once so listen up. If you haven’t seen BLADE RUNNER then you’re about to enter SPOILER territory, so read on at your own risk!

Thanks to his latest biblical epic, EXODUS: GODS AND KINGS, Scott has been doing the usual promotional rounds in which he sat down with Digital Spy to give his definitive answer on whether Deckard is a replicant or not. His answer? Are you ready? You sure?

“He is definitely a replicant,” says Scott.

Those of you who would argue well into the wee hours of the night with your friends about Deckard’s fate can finally put it to rest. He was a f*cking replicant the entire time?! According to Scott, though, that shouldn’t be much of a surprise because the film drops clues pointing viewers in that direction; the Unicorn bit, for example, which was added in a later cut of the film.

There you have it, folks, the question we’ve all wondered has finally been answered by the director himself. Interestingly enough, Harrison Ford tried to get this very answer from Scott, saying, "I was moved to ask Ridley whether or not he thought that the character I was playing was a Replicant. Well, I never got a straight answer. Which is okay, I guess. But I thought it was important that the audience be able to have a human representative on screen, somebody that they could have an emotional understanding of. Ridley didn't think that was all that important."

A BLADE RUNNER sequel is scheduled to start filming next year. Fingers crossed!
