Scream Factory and Code Red unveil major Blu-ray announcements

Last Updated on August 5, 2021

Though it has been a predictably slow news morning (stupid holiday season), we do have some huge announcements for you hi-def horror fans out there. Scream Factory and Code Red have revealed their latest licensing acquisitions for Blu-ray and believe me when I say they are epic.

We’ll start with Scream Factory. Their announcements amount to a big bucket of win on a weekly basis but with this next bit of news the company has officially topped themselves. Scream’s “super six” set of titles for 2013 are:

THE FOG (1980): John Carpenter’s seaside ghostly revenge flick with Adrienne Barbeau and Jamie Lee Curtis. New extras are in the works! First time on Blu-ray.

THE BURNING (1981): Summer camp. Garden shears. Tom Savini effects. Need we say more? First time on Blu-ray.

THE HOWLING (1981): Joe Dante’s ultimate werewolf pic with superb Rob Bottin effects. First time on Blu-ray.

LIFEFORCE (1985): Tobe Hooper’s space vampires and light-show extravaganza finally gets its first ever anamorphic widescreen presentation! First time on Blu-ray.

NIGHT OF THE COMET (1984): Shopping and zombies highlight this post-Doomsday cult classic. First time on Blu-ray.

DAY OF THE DEAD (1985): George Romero’s splattery undead classic gets a new collector’s edition with new extras.

That news just speaks for itself, doesn’t it? Aside from DAY OF THE DEAD, which has received decent-to-above average releases from Anchor Bay and Arrow Video, there isn’t a Blu-ray double dip in the bunch. Well done, Scream Factory!

Next up we have Code Red. The indie label specializes in unearthing some of the most obscure titles out there. Now, they’re bringing the following titles to Blu-ray in 2013:

CODE RED’s first Blu-Ray 001 will be the director’s cut of the 1974 classic THE ELECTRIC CHAIR (97 min. cut) with special features & extras; Hosted by Maria Kanellis and TV’s MONSTER MAN Cleve Hall.

NAIL GUN MASSACRE (Blu-Ray 002) with a brand new 2012 HD 1.78 transfer and a new 2012 HD fullframe boom mic cut and more dvd extras by original extra creator Loyd Cryer.

And finally the biggest announcement is JUST BEFORE DAWN, and this time it’s nice and clean and in HD, as I spared no expense to do this one right from the original interneg.

As far as there regular DVD releases go, the company has also announced such genre fare as CURSE OF THE BLUE LIGHTS (directed by Joe Johnston), TRICK OR TREATS (starring David Carradine and Steve Railsbeck), Lucio Fulci’s VOICES FROM BEYOND, GOLD OF THE AMAZON WOMEN (directed by Mark Lester), VAMPIRE’S NIGHT ORGY and VENGEANCE.

That’s quite a line-up if I do say so myself. Congrats to Scream Factory and Code Red for these major releases. Also, let me give my condolences to my wallet as it will probably empty around this time next year thanks to many of these titles. That’s okay, though, it’s worth it for Jamie Lee in HD…
