Shark thriller In The Deep may be helmed by Jaume Collet-Serra

Three weeks ago, we reported director Louis Letterier had drifted away from IN THE DEEP, a shark attack thriller said to be a combination of 127 HOURS and JAWS. It would appear as though Sony, the studio behind the film, isn’t waiting very long to find his replacement: Deadline reports Jaume Collet-Serra is currently in talks to take over for the departed Letterrier.

Collet-Serra has been Liam Neeson’s best friend of late, having helmed UNKNOWN, NONSTOP and RUN ALL NIGHT. He also has some genre cred thanks to his HOUSE OF WAX remake and ORPHAN. Evidently the deal is not yet final but discussions have begun.

Written by Tony Jaswinski, IN THE DEEP follows…

a young woman who is dealing with the recent death of her mother who, while  surfing on an isolated beach, gets stranded 20 yards off shore on a buoy. What lies between her and the shore is a huge great white shark.

It must be said, sharks are having a moment right now. In addition to this project, you’ve got Eli Roth’s MEG and the Mandy Moore-led 47 METERS DOWN on the horizon. And, of course, Syfy will throw a bunch more in our face next month with SHARKNADO 3. On this, the 40th anniversary of JAWS, it can be assumed Bruce the shark is proud of what he hath wrought.
