Shin Gojira gets an English title: Godzilla Resurgence

Last Updated on August 5, 2021

While the American GODZILLA rests in waiting for his 2018 sequel and 2020 crossover with King Kong, Godzilla's home studio in Japan, Toho Studios, is working on bringing back their original version of the monster. The 29th entry in their Godzilla franchise is being directed by Hideaki Anno and Shinji Higuchi and stars Hiroki Hasegawa, Yutaka Takenouchi, and Satomi Ishihara.

The film's Japanese title is SHIN GOJIRA, and most English-speaking Godzilla fans have been perfectly content with referring to it as SHIN GODZILLA, but news has come out of this week's American Film Market that the movie officially has a different title for English-speaking territories. That title – GODZILLA RESURGENCE.

Works for me, and this way Godzilla fans won't have to be explaining all the time that the word "shin" in the SHIN GODZILLA title means "true" or "new" and is also associated with deities.

A promo reel for GODZILLA RESURGENCE was screened at the AFM, but it was only shown to potential buyers, so it doesn't seem likely that we'll hear much, if anything, about what was going on in that footage.

SHIN GOJIRA is getting a summer 2016 release in Japan. Hopefully more distribution deals were secured by the screening of that promo reel so GODZILLA RESURGENCE can reach other places around the globe soon after.
