Sinister director Scott Derrickson set to adapt Stephen King's The Breathing Method for Blumhouse

10.15.2012by: Jake Dee

Say what now? Stephen King locking horns with the boys behind SINISTER? Great promise abounds!

Deadline has it that, yes, SINISTER director Scott Derrickson and producer Jason Blum (of Blumhouse Productions) have just struck a deal to adapt King's novella THE BREATHING METHOD to the big-screen. As King fanatics know, it's the only story from "Different Seasons" that has never been adapted before. Even more reason to rejoice!

With a good blessing from King himself, and a script to be penned by Scott Teems (THE EVENING SUN) - THE BREATHING METHOD:

Centers on an elderly physician named Dr. Emlyn McCarron who recounts an incident in his career of a patient who was determined to give birth to her illegitimate child, despite her financial difficulties and the social stigma in the 1930s. The patient turns to the doctor because of the book he has written about the Breathing Method, a system to help women through childbirth. She grows close with the doctor, who finds that she is so determined to have the child through the method that she lingers on even after a horrific accident on the way to the hospital.

You know the deal. King adaptations rarely bat .500, but with Derrickson onboard, we should feel confident in this one, right? Not that it'll be Kubrick's THE SHINING, but as long as it's better than Mick Garris', we're in good hands!
