Stephen King's IT expected to break records with $50mil+ opening weekend

08.17.2017by: Mike Sprague

I remember a few years back someone asked me what horror movie I thought would have the biggest chance at the box office and I quickly responded, "A remake of STEPHEN KING'S IT."

Why? Because these are three well-known original films (and 2 novels) that could be updated with fantastic modern motion pictures. We'll see if I ever end up being right about a remake of PET SEMATARY, but come the weekend of September 8th we'll know for sure about the new adaptation of IT.

And according to THR, the new film is tracking to open with at least $50 million.

This would break the record for top September debut, and if the film tops over $58 million, it would take the top spot of highest R-rated horror debut away from the current record-holder HANNIBAL.

Personally, I feel the film will open over $60 million, no problem. What do you think? Make sure to hit us up on social media and let us know on Facebook, Twitter, and/or Instagram

IT synopsis:

A group of young kids faces their biggest fears when they seek answers to the disappearance of children in their hometown of Derry, Maine. They square off against an evil clown named Pennywise, whose history of murder and violence dates back for centuries.

IT is directed by Andrés Muschietti from a script by Chase Palmer & Cary Joji Fukunaga and Gray Dauberman, based on the novel by Stephen King.

The film stars Jaeden Lieberher, Sophia Lillis, Finn Wolfhard, Wyatt Oleff, Jack Dylan Grazer, Jeremy Ray Taylor, Chosen Jacobs, Nicholas Hamilton, Owen Teague, Javier Botet, Steven Williams, and Bill Skarsgård as Pennywise the Dancing Clown.

IT hits theaters (including IMAX) nationwide September 8th.

Extra Tidbit: With the trailer getting as much love as it did, the film could break $100 million opening weekend. But we'll see about that...
