Stephen King's Shining sequel gets official release date

09.19.2012by: Ike Oden

Ever wonder what happened to Danny Torrance after his stay at the Overlook Hotel? So did Stephen King, who since last year has been hard at work on a literary sequel to THE SHINING. Yesterday, the master of the macabre announced a release date for said novel, DOCTOR SLEEP, via his website:

Scribner and Hodder & Stoughton have established September 24, 2013 as the official first publication date for Doctor Sleep, a sequel to The Shining.

That’s a pretty long wait, but it's understandable given King’s books are typically longer than the Bible. The man doesn't exactly churn them out like James Patterson. Not that I’m complaining-- King remains prolific (within reason) and seems to be getting better with age. Regardless, if you absolutely cannot wait a year for the book to get here, we’ve included a video of King reading a chapter from the novel live. Check it out, along with the synopsis, below.

Danny is a hospice worker who uses his powers to help ill patients to pass away without pain. Unfortunately, he runs afoul of a gang of wandering psychic vampires who feed on people's energy.

Extra Tidbit: Do you think DOCTOR SLEEP is going to help or hurt the proposed SHINING prequel being developed at Warner Bros? Talk back below...
