Swedish horror film Mara gets U.S. distribution

Last Updated on August 5, 2021

Listen– when legendary indepndent filmmaker Jim Wynorski (CHOPPING MALL, RETURN OF THE SWAMP THING) tells us a film is worth a look, we prick up our ears and listen. The master of the modern B-movie has given his seal of approval to MARA, a Swedish horror flick that just been picked up for distribution by MVD Entertainment.

“Mara” is Swedish glamour model Angelica Jansson’s feature film debut… In “Mara,” Angelica plays Jenny, who as a little girl witnessed a brutal act of violence in her home, a murder that scarred her for life. Trying to process her childhood trauma, Jenny returns to the scene of the crime as an adult. Along with a couple of friends she intends to relax and enjoy herself during a weekend in this gloomy, secluded house in the middle of the woods. However, the stay turns into a trip to Hell when it turns out there’s an intruder in the house. A shadow from the past. Somebody out for blood. Jenny finds herself stuck in a nightmare without end.

Wynorski describes the film as “Chillingly atmospheric, MARA’s icy grip will send shivers down your spine from first frame to last.” Based on the (somewhat NSFW) trailer, it looks like Big Jim may be on the money once again. The flick marks the first feature from Filmkoncept Scandinavia and is written, produced and directed by Fredrik Hedberg, Jacob Kondrup and Åke Gustafsson. Check out the preview and Swedish DVD artwork below for a good idea of what to expect from MARA this spring.
