Hardcore horror fans tend to not take the SyFy network's original programming very seriously, but since the debut of their chilling creepypasta anthology Channel Zero, heads have been turning. Does their horror content have potential? Obviously, shows will still have to be judged on a case-by-case basis, but this makes their new horror shows even more intriguing.

Right on schedule, the network has announced that they have ordered a 13 episode first season of Superstition, a New Orleans-set supernatural drama from showrunner Joel Anderson Thompson. The show will begin production in early 2017 with a premiere slotted for later that year. Mario Van Peebles (NEW JACK CITY, BAADASSSSS!) will write (with Brusta Brown and John Mitchell Todd), direct, and star in some episodes of the series, which:

centers on the Mosley family, owners of the only funeral home in a fictitious town on the outskirts of New Orleans where they’re also keepers of the town’s dark secrets and history. Known for its haunted houses, elevated graveyards, odd townsfolk and rich history of unusual phenomena, the town is also a “landing patch” for the world’s darkest manifestations of fear, guided into the world by an ancient, mysterious malefactor named The Dredge.

Superstition is produced by Van Peebles and XLrator Media’s Barry Gordon. Laurence Andries is executive producing.
