Terminator 5 moves ahead, Justin Lin forced to drop out but may return

The TERMINATOR 5 saga persists…

Last we heard, FAST FIVE director Justin Lin had met with James Cameron and Arnold Schwarzenegger in August to discuss some preliminary concepts for a 5th franchise installment. As you know, Lin directed the wildly successful FAST FIVE, and pretty much has his choice of what to helm moving forward. Thing is, with his commitment to FAST SIX (or whatever imaginative title they come up with), Lin may miss his opportunity to give direction to the red-eyed cyborg. Peep it…

According to Deadline, the first of two TERMINATOR films is now a heavy priority for producer Megan Ellis, who, along with Arnie, wants the flick to get made by late 2012. Part of the reason for the rush is that the rights to the property will ultimately revert back to James Cameron if the movie isn’t made by 2018. Still, with 7 years out, Arnie and Ellis aren’t sure they want to wait for Lin to finish FAST SIX (his unavailability also led Lin to drop out of HIGHLANDER).

So, unless the star and producer can find a more promising filmmaker, my guess it they’re likely to twiddle their thumbs. Lin is certainly still interested, but as it goes when you have a hit movie, his time is in high demand.

What do you think? Should another director be given the gig or would Arnie and company be wise to wait for Lin?
