"I can't remember the last time I saw such a fearless, powerful, heartbreaking, scary and layered performance in a horror film. Gretchen Lodge simply blew me away! " - John Fallon aka The Arrow
What makes that choice somewhat unique is that this was Gretchen's first lead role and her first horror film. She actually had ZERO acting credits when she responded to a casting notice in Back Stage to audition for Lovely Molly in New York. Shit, I couldn't even find her date or place of birth online! That's how unknown she is! So why am I picking her? Have you seen the film?!!! That's why! I can't remember the last time I saw such a fearless, powerful, heartbreaking, scary and layered performance in a horror film. Gretchen Lodge simply blew me the f*ck away! Stage trained, Gretchen's commitment to the character and her bold approach to all of its aspects totally won me over. Physically, psychologically, sexually, you name it, she ran with it and made it her bitch. She bared her character’s mind, body and soul and put out a raw and visceral display that resonated with me big time. Straight up, and this is just my opinion, in a fair world, based on this performance, Gretchen Lodge should be a HUGE star right now and if The Oscars recognized small genre films like this one, she should get the statuette. That's how good she was! If I look at current young actresses with stardom in their pockets, gals like Kristen Stewart, Ashley Greene or Amanda Siegfried... they ain't got jack or shit on Gretch talent wise. Not even close!
Physically, Gretchen reminded me of a young Jenny Wright in Near Dark. And for anybody that knows me, the whole thin, small breasts, green or blue eyes, short hair spiel is one of my top types. So yeah she had me on a superficial level too. Now I've done a lot of research to write this piece, but alas there is very little about Gretchen out there. So, here's what I managed to unearthed about AITH's 2012 Mistress of the Year!
She has a gorgeous smile and very soulful eyes. She's obviously a very artistic person, her passions are acting and writing, which are two things I can relate to. In video interviews I've seen of her, she seems to be sweet, genuine and bright.
MOVIES TO SEE FOR HER ACTING TALENT:
So far Lovely Molly and that's it. I dare ya to name me a more compelling performance than Gretchen's in a horror film this year.
MOVIE TO SEE FOR T&A:
She shows everything (NSFW) in Lovely Molly. But be advised, it wasn't pleasant nudity (NSFW) in the sense that when it went down, the character of Molly was in a pretty dark place, hence nixing out the arousal factor for this horn dog.
LITTLE KNOWN FACT:
She was trained in theatre in London and did plays there before she moved to New York. When she decided to be an actress, she thought she'd solely do Shakespeare (which she loves) for the rest of her life.
WHAT I WISH HER FOR THE NEW YEAR :
Last I heard, she was finishing writing a short film and a feature length script. So I wish her the best with those. I keep getting the feeling that she's gonna wind up directing at some point, but that's just a hunch, not based on any substancial facts. For the New Year, I wish Gretchen inner peace, love and self fullfillment via her upcoming projects coming together. I also wish for her to get more notoriety for her incredible talent and from a selfish point of view, I want to see Gretch in another horror film. Shite, if there's ever to be a Rosemary's Baby remake (we all know it's coming sooner or later), she'd be ideal for the role. So there ya have it! Gretchen Lodge, AITH's Mistress of the Year... and due to ONE performance in ONE movie alone. Hey! BEYOND WELL EARNED! There's a first time for eveything. Happy New Year girl!
