After making his English language debut with the 2015 drama LOUDER THAN BOMBS, filmmaker Joachim Trier has returned to his Norwegian roots with the romantic supernatural thriller THELMA, which is about a young woman who is "unaware that she possesses frightening powers."

The Orchard, which distributed LOUDER THAN BOMBS, has picked up the North American distribution rights for THELMA, but have not yet announced a release date.

Written by Trier and Eskil Vogt, the film centers on

a young Norwegian student moves to Oslo and falls in love with a beautiful classmate. At the same time, she begins to notice her own mystifying and inexplicable connection to the supernatural.

Eili Harboe, Okay Kaya, Ellen Dorrit Petersen, and Henrik Rafaelsen star.

IndieWire got the exclusive first look at the (English subtitled) teaser trailer earlier this month. That flashy – literally, there's a lot of flashing things in it – teaser can be seen below, offering just over a minute of interesting, unsettling, and impressive imagery.

THELMA looks to be a film that's worth keeping an eye on. We'll provide an update when The Orchard reveals the details of their release plans.
