EPISODE 7: Sing Me A Song

THE HOOK: Carl’s plan to kill Negan not only falls apart when he’s captured, but goes from bad to worse when Negan decides to return him to Alexandria in person.

The following contains MAJOR SPOILERS, so I don’t recommend reading this if you haven’t watched this episode

THE LOWDOWN: You know, the haters are still griping about this show, “do people still watch this”, “it’s the same old thing”, but I beg to differ. Tonight’s episode shows me exactly why this show’s still running on all cylinders. There’s so much going on, from so many different angles (and characters), that next Sunday feels like a year away. I’ve said this a few times this season, and I’ll say it again, the way they’ve layered this storyline is what great television is all about. Period. There’s ups, there’s downs, but the base is solid and they just keep building on this intricate plot with Negan at the center of it. His character is exactly what this show needed. Anyway, let’s get to the review.

First off, Carl. Only Carl would be stupid enough to just go after Negan guns blazing right out of the supply truck. The funny thing about it is, that’s the only thing that saved him. Negan is intrigued by Carl, there’s no doubt about it. He’s also a little scared of him, which he, himself, admits. That said, watching the standoffish banter between them is damn near hypnotic. Negan’s working him, to be sure, but I honestly believe he has no idea what to make of Carl yet. He’s a total surprise. Negan’s not used to surprises, and despite knowing he should just put him down, he’s having too much fun with the “idea” of Carl at this point. Of course, I think Carl strikes a chord in him, something deep down Negan may not even know is there. It’s cool to watch, because you know everything about them being in the same room is wrong, but you can’t look away either.

The rest of crew are going a little crazy too it seems, everyone’s out for themselves, in all the wrong ways. Michonne is out for blood, or at least it looks that way to me. I don’t think she’d just walk up to Negan and try to cut his head off, but damn, I’m not positive she wouldn’t either. Guess we’ll see soon enough. Rosita isn’t long for this world I don’t think. She’s consumed with hate and revenge. I don’t blame her at all, but she’s beyond reasoning, and most importantly, unable to “play the game” until the right moment. She’s going to make a mistake and it’s going to cost lives. Speaking of which, Spencer is playing a dangerous game by openly undermining Rick, and, well, saying he’d be better off dead. Father Gabriel calling him a shit was hilarious, but he’s far more than that, he’s the worst kind of dangerous in a situation like this. Whatever he’s plotting won’t end well for anyone. Rick and Aaron find a zombie moat (looks like fun), and Jesus, well, not exactly sure what’s up with him because he was barely there.

THE WALKING DEAD Season 7’s seventh episode put a lot of separate plot lines on the table, and most of them are pretty damn juicy. The Daryl one has my eye, mainly because poor Daryl’s been on the sidelines this season. Will he escape? God I hope so, and although it’d be nice to see him kill Dwight on the way out, I think the show has more in store for his character. What’s blowing my mind is Negan’s sudden trip to Alexandria to (supposedly) drop Carl off. It won’t be that easy, not by a longshot. Seeing him with Judith sends shivers down my spine. Not sure how in hell they missed her the first time he visited, but he sure as hell put it all together this time, and where will that road take us? Not sure I want to know. Next week is the ninety minute mid-season finale folks, so expect some fireworks…and maybe some waterworks.

ZOMBIE KILL OF THE WEEK: Michonne’s badass walk and whistle followed by slicing and dicing any walkers to come her way, in this case, putting her sword through one’s head and taking the other’s head clean off.

BLOOD AND GORE: Michonne does some zombie killing, but the craziest scene involves a hot iron and Negan’s form of branding/punishment.

COOLEST SCENE: There was a lot of cool to go around tonight, but I’m gonna go with Negan instructing Dwight to give Daryl a “Time out”, followed by flipping him the finger.

FINAL VERDICT:
