TV Review: The Walking Dead (Season 4, Episode 11, February 23, 2014)

EPISODE 11: Claimed

THE HOOK: In the wake of war with Woodbury, Rick and his group have turned the prison into a working community, but danger continues to stir on the outside as well as from within.

The following contains MAJOR SPOILERS, so I don't recommend reading this if you haven't watched this episode

THE LOWDOWN: Tonight takes off where last week left us, with Abraham, his crew, Tara and unconscious Glenn. Were treated to Abraham taking out three walkers, and having a blast whilst doing it. Like Tara, I was also pleasantly surprised by his smiling demeanor. I guess Tallahassee (ZOMBIELAND) was right when he said you have to enjoy the little things. Its clear that Abraham will quickly become a fan favorite, and I for one, am already on the A-Team. I dont remember him saying anything in the comics about being on his way to Washington to help save the world, but then again, its been awhile since Ive read that far back. All in all, loving his angle and attitude.

You can almost hear a large sigh of relief back at Rick, Carl and Michonnes house, and its great to see Michonne and Carl laughing over breakfast. The Judith slipup was bound to derail the mood because its something Rick and Carl just arent ready to talk about right now. Its obvious Rick hates having to stay back when they run for supplies, feeling like hes the weak link, but man does he prove otherwise later on, but Ill come back to that. Michonne is really trying to conquer her demons tonight, opening up to Carl the way she does. I wasnt sure shed ever mention her son to anyone, but the situation called for it and she did. The tomb in the upstairs of that house was gut-wrenching, it would be for anyone, but naturally its Michonne that has to find it. Her will, strength and courage are put to test and she comes out shining.

Ricks catnap is interrupted when he hears arguing downstairs. A group of heavily armed men are in the house, clearing room after room, so he hides under the bed. Now before we get into that, is it me, or is there suddenly all kinds of human clusters roaming the streets? In the earlier seasons, people were so rare a find, now theyre everywhere it seems. Well, this group clearly isnt as family oriented as our group because one guy kills another for a damn bed. Seriously guys? Because you dont have enough problems. Rick manages to take one out in the bathroom, get a gun and shimmy his way down the side of the house. Luckily the dude they killed upstairs goes walker just as Carl and Michonne come into view and the three of them get away clean. The guy on the porch was played by Jeff Kober (hes been in a lot of flicks, but lately you can find him on SONS OF ANARCHY playing Jacob Hale), so Im sure well be seeing him again. As for his crew, the bed fighting aside, I have to wonder how they got the guns and survived this long if the guy upstairs didnt realize the dude he killed would come back. Dumbass.

THE WALKING DEAD SEASON 4's eleventh episode develops our characters a bit, but also offers up plenty of action and suspense. Now speaking of dumbasses, why are all the so-called smart guys on this show so f*cking careless? Abrahams scientist dude, Eugene, supposedly the guy who can help save the damn world, suddenly doesnt know how to work a machine gun and manages to shoot the hell out of their truck while Glenn and Abraham are fighting like bitches. Once again, it becomes obvious that were our own worst enemies, even in a zombie apocalypse. When Rosita and Eugene decide to help Glenn and Tara track down Maggie, Eugene actually says to Abraham, Trust me, Im smarter than you. Tell that to the truck, asshat. I also didnt like his smirkthat just might imply he did it on purpose for some reason. Who knows with this damn show. Theres also the tidbit about Washington not responding for the past couple weeks, and the fact that Rick and crew are heading up the tracks to Terminus to consider, making this a pretty cool episode.

ZOMBIE KILL OF THE WEEK: Abraham gets it for sure. Im pretty sure Woody Harrelson is a fan of the show, and the way Abraham took out those three walkers made him smile. I did too.

BLOOD AND GORE: We got one big walker throwdown on the street, Abrahams three walker fight, a grizzly farewell to a family and a couple strangulations.

WTF CHARACTER MOMENT: Eugene. Again, I dont know what the hell this guys problem is, but clearly he has one. Anyone traveling with Abraham would know how to use a machine gun. Period. The guy would have seen to it. So what the hell? I dont like him already.

COOLEST SCENE: I liked Ricks Solid Snake stealth mission through the house tonight. It was fun to watch, and the boost he needed to get back in the game. Nice work Rick.

I always love Walking Dead. However, I was under the impression that all of the yelling in the house before Rick took off was because they simply found the guy killed in the bathroom but what everyone is saying, especially the fact that Rick left the door open, points to the idea that he re-animated and started killing.

I can't stand the Eugene guy. It's not even so much the character but the way the actor is saying his lines makes it seem like he's trying to make him amusing and gimmicky.

My two cents: They want Glenn's baby.

No seriously though, this was a fantastic episode and showed again why this show is so highly rated and viewed by many. I enjoyed every single second of it and was left wanting more.

This was a damn good episode. As far as what is waiting for them at Terminus i hope it is the community they find in the comics after the prison. I'm hoping the guys from the house play into the next couple of episodes as a version of a storyline from the comics, that shows the depths of depravity people have come to during this situation, that landed between the prison and that community.
I know this seems rather vague but i don't want to ruin anything for people that haven't read any of the

Just seen the episode...shit man, I caught myself holding my breath during the Rick in the house scenes...TWICE! Also creepy what those guys had in plan for a certain returning occupant of the house. It's an angle not fully explored in Walking Dead yet...Randall's revelations during his interrogation and the Guv'nor cop out aside.

Why are all the lawns neatly moved in the area where the Carl/Rick/Michonne segments played out? Shouldn't they be really overgrown by now?

The guys raiding the house reminded my of The Road.

They would have eaten Rick and Carl and... Well they would have eaten Michonne eventually.

Another good episode. Oh yeah and Eugene is full of shit. He knows how to save the World as much as I do.

I'm glad to hear someone else doesn't like Eugene. He struck me as someone who will be annoying for a very long time.. He acted like he was either a robot or handicapped. I haven't read beyond where they are on TV, soon don't know much about him, but that was a horrible first impression.

TIDBIT Question:

Cannibals. Cannibals. Cannibals.

They were in the comics, they were the catalyst that got Rick back into bad-ass territory after his stint in crazy land, and the way those signs are all over the place seem a bit too conveniently worded to comfort and push you towards "Sanctuary" that it feels like tasty bait in one big cannibalistic rat trap.

POTENTIAL SPOILERS

You mentioned you don't remember Abraham trying to make his way to Washington in the comics, but this storyline seems like it's been lifted out of the comics verbatim. That was the whole reason how Abraham ran into Rick's group and how they eventually end up where they currently are in the comics.

Eugene...

If you do not like Eugene already you'll hate him once you find out about him a little more as It sounds like they are keeping in line with the character from the comics....

You missed some stuff

1) The bed altercation did not end up in death. He's clearly breathing on the floor when Rick is under the bed staring at him. He was just choked out. The zombie they were interrupted by was the guy Rick killed in the bathroom.

2) Eugene didn't "suddenly" forget how to fire a machine gun. When Abraham asks him how he could ruin the truck, Eugene says it's because he doesn't have experience with weapons. He's obviously off in some ways, so it's not surprising he'd lack that skill even

But overall, this was a solid episode. Michonne and Abraham being highlights as well as Rick getting himself back together.

Yeah, I thought the guy by the bed was dead too, but he was turning, it's an easy mistake to make because you never know with this show. Love Abraham's whole deal, he's a crackup. Good review.

Cool episode, and I think you're right about Abraham becoming a fan favorite, I already love the guy, he's hilarious! Can't wait to see where it goes from here.

to me it sounded like no one was killed. The guy in the bedroom was choked unconscious by his friend, and the guy in the bathroom was choked unconscious by Rick. I think the comotion we heard was because walkers were coming into the house from the back entrance. great episode!

We need to clarify a couple things. First that dude didn't kill his comrade in the bedroom. He was clearly breathing.. He was just knocked out. The dude Rick killed in the bathroom is the one who went walker. Hell Rick even opened the bathroom door so he could get out. This was all discussed in Talking Dead. So no, Rick didn't get away clean.

Sounds like it was clarified for you by Talking Dead, but I don't think everyone watches that show.

I watch the talking dead but i also watched this episode. the dude WAS breathing by the bed. Rick in fact left the door open on purpose. The guy in the bathroom DID die. Rick left it there on purpose.
