EPISODE 14: The Grove

THE HOOK: In the wake of war with Woodbury, Rick and his group have turned the prison into a working community, but danger continues to stir on the outside as well as from within.

The following contains MAJOR SPOILERS, so I don't recommend reading this if you haven't watched this episode

THE LOWDOWN: Wow, I have to say Im still in awe of what I just watched. On the one hand, people can argue that this show is just another zombie show in a long list of zombie themed stories and films, but they would be wrong. What we saw tonight was different, and thats what you get when you draw out the human dynamic in a situation like this one. What makes this show so great is its ability to actually pull us into this world like its really happening, and make us feel what these characters are going through. That in itself is a triumph from where Im sitting, so haters be damned, The Walking Dead is still going strong and tonights episode (as painfully tragic as it was) definitely raised the bar.

As I said before, this particular pairing of characters was a bomb just waiting to explode in our faces. First, theres Lizzy and Mika. We all knew there was something off about these two, but damn, just DAMN! For a moment there, after Mika shot the walker and Lizzy was freaking out, I thought the two of them might just make it. Mika was comforting her sister and I thought it was a real bonding type of moment. Then Mika finds her feeding the train tracks walker a mouse (we all knew she was behind the mouse business, the sick little bitch), and she starts going on about changing and whatnot. Right then and there Id have clocked her with the butt end of my gun and fed her to the damn walker. If only. And then theres the whole bit with her playing in the yard with her friend who Carol smokes. Then Lizzy loses her shit spouting stuff like, what If I killed you to Carol. That said, my heart nearly stopped when Carol and Tyreese found her standing over Mikas body.

Its hard to even describe what that scene did to me. I felt myself shaking my head in denial, like someone reached into my chest, grabbed a handful of wet stuff and yanked it out. If you thought the shooting of Sophia was rough, then maybe you better skip this episode entirely cause it aint pretty. I dont know whats worse for Carol and Tyreese, trying to wade through Lizzys insanity, or knowing what had to come next. Poor Carol. Doesnt that woman have enough emotional scars? Putting Lizzy down Old Yeller style had to have extinguished whatever light was still in her heart. Im sure there wasnt much left, but whatever was there is no doubt gone now.

THE WALKING DEAD SEASON 4's fourteenth episode is a game changer for this series, and quite possibly featured one of the most brutally emotional scenes Ive ever seen on TV. Carol blames herself, and as she slowly begins to drown in guilt, she decides to lay the truth on Tyreese. I think we all figured he wouldnt kill her, but I didnt expect him to say I forgive you. It was a powerful scene, and to be honest, this entire episode was a symphony of emotional ups and downs from everyone involved. They sure as shit didnt pull any damn punches, and if theyre going for the jugular now, I cringe at the idea of how theyll end the season. So much bloodshed and sadness in such a beautiful wooden hideaway. The world truly is haunted.

ZOMBIE KILL OF THE WEEK: You know what, I know this is bending the rules, but Lizzy was a monster. Maybe not a zombie, but definitely a monster, so her death is the kill of the day, and it couldnt come fast enough.

BLOOD AND GORE: Lots of walkers getting shot up, a mouse bites it, and two little girls go to rest in a quiet little grove in the woods. R.I.P Mika, you deserved better.

WTF CHARACTER MOMENT: Lizzy. OMFG. The depth of her psychosis would have even the brightest minds shaking their heads. Killing your own sister, the girl who was looking out for you, who understood you were five kinds of f*cked and still didnt judge you. Thats some cold shit right there. Burn Lizzie. Burn.

COOLEST SCENE: I cant call the deaths of kids cool, its just not right. I liked Tyreeses haunted speech he gives Carol in the woods. He has no idea her tears are tears of guilt, which simply makes it that much cooler to watch. The emotional tension building between them was intense.

FINAL VERDICT:

TELL US WHAT YOU THOUGHT OF THIS EPISODE BELOW!

Extra Tidbit: F*ck me, that was nuts.

Intense barely describes the episode. Lots of people weighing on both sides on how Lizzy should have been handled. It was clear she was a blossoming serial killer, and in today's world you can lock them up and try to help them. In this world, however, Carol did the only logical thing get rid of her. Lizzy wasn't going to stop and would have kept killing, while horrible to watch a child get executed like that I get it. Who knows where Carol goes from here, you don't come back from where she

Amazing Episode

One of the best of the whole show so far. Great Television, just great!
PS: loved the nod to Fallout 1 in the beginning, that song brings back good times.

I hate to be that annoying "I saw it coming because I read the books" guy, but I am. The key differences are that they changed the genders of the siblings, these two girls had way more personality than the two brothers in the comic, and someone else took out the psycho kid. It was still effective, though, thanks largely to McBride's performance.

Just finished in airing in the UK.

Jesus christ. That was messed up.
Best episode of season 4 and one of the best of the series. Now pained that there are 2 episodes left and we have to wait till October for what is now one of the best things on TV.

The only way this episode could have been more hardcore would be if Lizzy had knifed Mika AND Judith. I think Carol's anger might have got the better of her and unloaded her pistol into Lizzy right there and kept clicking the empty rounds until Tyreese took the gun away from her. I'm loving this 4th season so far!!!!!

Every episode is great

I've really enjoyed this second half of season 4 with the focus being on the different groups. I disagree that both kids were messed up ("We all knew there was something off about these two"), it was Lizzie who was messed up, not Mika. Mika represented innocence and not wanting to kill anybody, normal or zombie. She was even smart enough to realize how screwed up Lizzie was and told Carol about it point blank.

The real highlight of this episode for me was Tyrese. So far he hasn't done

The real highlight of this episode for me was Tyrese. So far he hasn't done anything for me but he became a fully rounded out character in this episode and I have a lot more respect for him now. I'm actually really interested in seeing where he goes from here.

Yeah, these broken-up-group episodes have done wonders for the newer, less developed characters. They made me care about Bob last week. I get the guy now and care about what happens to him.

Yup, I like Bob a bit more now too but I don't 100% trust him just yet. I still want to know what happened to the two groups he was with before Rick's group and if he may have had something to do with it.

I have a feeling Bob's drinking made him fall asleep at his post or something like that. Was he drinking cough syrup during last weeks episode?

That was hard to watch, and I agree with you and pjforlife, its hard to be either angry or sympathetic for Lizzie, I'm both. I agree with everything you both said. This episode left me in limbo. What a great season, and if the finale can top this episode we're in for a emotional ride.

Umm. Did anyone else notice that neither Tyreese or Carol had the baby with them at the end? Did they just leave it?

Noticed that assumed they had the baby in the backpack, even though not exactly a healthy thing putting a baby in a backpack

Melissa McBride confirmed on Talking Dead that Judith was in the blanket strapped onto Tyreese's back.

I agree, it didn't look like Judith was with them at first, until you saw Tyreese's back. I get they expected us to believe Judith was in that blanket, but it didn't look all that baby friendly.

Judith was strapped to Tyreese's back. I thought she was missing at first too, so I rewound the scene. You can clearly see her wrapped up on his back.

Intense

I follow this column every week, I sometimes comment but read it no matter what. This weeks episode actually pained me, I read the comics and recall the 2 brothers in that but the one that killed the other was a psychopath even at that young age. With Lizzie tonight she did not kill her sister out of anger, or any other emotion, she had an altered view on this reality. I cannot be mad at her for what she did because she did not do what she did out of malice, you could almost say she did it

I cannot be mad at her for what she did because she did not do what she did out of malice, you could almost say she did it out of love in that she thought she could communicate with the undead and this would form a new bond with her sister. J.A I respect your writing every week but have to disagree with you on this one. Lizzie gets my sympathy not my anger. I give this episode 10/10 for the sheer reason I have trouble finding the words to describe it, and the intensity and the acting on the part of those kids was just incredible. This one will stay with me for awhile.

This is, with out a doubt, one of the most brutal episodes of the series. When you you invest your self into these characters and something like this happens, it really tears you up. There are a lot of parallels on the net being made about the Carol Lizzie scene and Mice and Men. Lizzie didn't even get it. She was just worried about Carol being mad at her. The episode left me pretty devastated. That's why it's one of the best shows on Television.
