EPISODE 4: Indifference

THE HOOK: In the wake of war with Woodbury, Rick and his group have turned the prison into a working community, but danger continues to stir on the outside as well as from within.

The following contains MAJOR SPOILERS, so I don't recommend reading this if you haven't watched this episode

THE LOWDOWN: Tonight’s episode opened with an eerie conversation between Carol and Lizzie. Carol gets a little spooked when Lizzie slips up and calls her “mom”, but what’s scary is the kid’s way of thinking when it comes to walkers. From what she’s saying, I’m pretty sure she’s the one feeding them. That kid’s messed up, and given Carol’s new way of thinking, I don’t think she’s the one to set her straight. And speaking of messed up, we have Tyreese. I would stay as far away from him as possible. And is it me, or did he and Michonne almost share a “moment”? It’s a little too early for him to react or move on it, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see it happen down the road as they do hook up in the comics. I know, I know, she and Daryl are flirting pretty hard too, but I don’t think that’s going to happen.

The recon gang seemingly have good luck tonight, and I enjoyed the side chat between Bob and Daryl. I thought poor Bob was making real headway until they found the booze. I knew he found some, the way they played it out was obvious, but why take it after giving Daryl that speech? I’m sure he didn’t plan on anyone seeing, but still, dick move, and almost as ridiculously stupid as threatening to throw down on Daryl. Seriously, bro, how dumb are you? He’s lucky “old Daryl” didn’t take over and toss his ass off the roof. Merle probably would have cut his balls off first—I miss Merle. Not to get ahead of myself, but I’m thinking he’ll be hitting the road here soon as well. Maybe Bob and Carol will meet up with the Governor and opt for some revenge action. Stranger things have happened.

There was a lot of opening up tonight, something we haven’t seen much of lately, and as much as people whine about character development in this show, I like it. If these characters don’t talk to one another and throw their emotions on the table from time to time, they’re just meat for the zombies or victims for the predators. I can’t help but wonder—looking back now—if Rick was planning on banishing Carol from the start, making this the reason he chose her to go on the run with him. Granted, there wasn’t a hell of a lot of options, and Carol (or C-1000 as I like to call her) is exactly the kind of person I’d want having my back. I like to think he wanted to take this time to feel her out, and that he was secretly hoping her point of view was redeeming. I think it could have been if bitch wasn’t so damn cold. I had no problem with her getting those kids to help out, that said, I wouldn’t have split them up, they seemed a little too flighty and way too inexperienced for that—they hid from one walker in a bathroom for two days for Christ sake. But her reaction to seeing the chick become walker food was enough to make Rick James roll over in his grave and scream “that was, cooold blooded”. I guess Rick’s reaction (our Rick) could be summed up with “F yo couch, Carol.”

THE WALKING DEAD SEASON 4's fourth episode was a bit of a slow burn, and looks like a step in the direction of civil war. Okay, so maybe that’s a little dramatic, but it will come down to what Rick tells the group. I don’t think he’ll lie about it. This may lead to a getting back on the horse as leader speech, or he may just throw it on the table like Carol did when she admitted to burning the bodies. He’ll no doubt go to what’s left of the council first, which in itself will be interesting, mostly because of Daryl’s relationship with Carol. He’ll be pissed for sure. Hershel may side with Rick, but it’s hard to tell. I think Rick made the wrong call. I’m not going to say that Carol was right, but let’s be honest here, the moral road should come down to the individual circumstance. Carol was looking out for the greater good, even though it should have been obvious that containment was out of the question. Regardless, it was a council decision, and that’s what I feel the main consensus of the group will be. It’ll be quite the conversation I’m sure.

ZOMBIE KILL OF THE WEEK: Michonne deals out a double beheading. I love when she does that.

BLOOD AND GORE: The gang fight a small group of walkers. Michonne slices and dices, Tyreese gives us more hammer time, there’s a lot of knifing to the head, and a chick gets eaten.

WTF CHARACTER MOMENT: Rick. Here’s the thing, Rick took Carol out on that run to assess the situation, and other than her talking about her husband, she was cold as ice. I get his way of thinking, but given the 180 Carol has taken, I felt that he should have waited and given that speech to her in front of the council (or at least someone else). If that situation were real (obviously nothing was going to happen to Rick tonight), I think there was a good chance she’d have killed him. However, she took the news surprisingly well.

COOLEST SCENE: A lot of cool stuff happened, but I kinda dug when Bob defended the group of people that died together, and then gave the trapped walker on the floor a merciful death after looking at the pictures on the wall. Another reason why I hated him getting sidetracked by booze.

FINAL VERDICT:

TELL US WHAT YOU THOUGHT OF THIS EPISODE BELOW!

Extra Tidbit: This feels like the perfect setup for Michonne and Tyreese to take off and get caught by the Governor like they did in the comics.

I love when they go out on runs, especially during the time they've been at the prison, the change of scenery is good.
As a side note about the article, I enjoy reading every week, and the spoiler alert at the top is appreciated, I don't read this until I've watched the episode, but there's no spoiler waring for what happens in the comics (which are mentioned a lot in these articles), I know the show isn't following them religiously, but I'm sure they take a lot of source material from them,

Great episode. I do like the pacing right now. There's a lot of tension in what is happening right now, and I am enjoying it. I think Rick made the right decision here. Carol stopped being a team player. She says that she did it for the group, but her actions tell that she is acting selfishly and cannot be trusted. I agree he was assessing her, but I also think he was hoping that she would display remorse or realize how selfish her actions were. However, she simply proved to be cold. She had

I agree he was assessing her, but I also think he was hoping that she would display remorse or realize how selfish her actions were. However, she simply proved to be cold. She had lost a lot of her humanity. I think that her inadvertently getting the two people they met killed was the last straw. Rick was trying to keep them alive, but Carol's suggestion intervened and there was nothing Rick could do. Seeing that they were killed cemented the fact that Rick couldn't trust her with other lives anymore. I do think it's a very interesting change they did with Carol and I have to wonder if we'll see her on the show again. Her fate in the comics is pretty sad, so I like that they made her strong here. I am actually okay with seeing Carol leave, I just hope she doesn't come back bitter over what's happened. I would hate to see her try to take Rick and crew on.

Good review, but you're wrong about Carol making the moral choice. What she did was anything but moral, and I support Rick's decision of banishing her from the group. It doesn't matter that Karen and David probably would have died anyways, it wasn't her decision to make. Going above everyone's head and making risky choices, (murder, giving unstable children knives, taking unnecessary risks outside of the prison) doesn't lead to a moral perspective on things. Going above everyone's head and making risky choices, (murder, giving unstable children knives, taking unnecessary risks outside of the prison) doesn't lead to a moral perspective on things. Some of those choices may be logical, but if you forget to consider the human element in your decision making then all you're left with is cold hard logic. That's not what Rick and the others are living for, they want more than just calculation. Shane thought in a similar fashion when he decided he needed to kill that kid at the end of season 2. Would you consider what he did to be moral? I thought not...

Also, there was no waiting to bring this issue back to the council. If Tyrese had been there when they returned, that would have been the end of Carol. Rick wasn't going to make a decision that could lead to bloodshed. He would have also risked endangering the lives of others, especially his own family, by letting her stay in the group. You said it yourself, she's as cold as ice.

Great Episode

I liked the episode a lot. While Carol's actions came down to calculating pragmatism, she's lost empathy for her fellow beings. While that does not mean she doesn't love or will do anything for those she loves, her cold practicality will always choose the circumstance that grants her the most gain, regardless of how brutal that circumstance may ask for or sacrifice. In some ways, that is frightening and could pose a threat in a world where humanity struggles everyday to maintain their

Extra info: While antibiotics may not work against bacterial infections, there are antivirals. If this is a novel viral infection though, the antivirals may provide minimal benefits.

Great episode

What Carol did was the rational, logical thing to do. She could bury any feeling about it and just do it...so yes, a little bit of a sociopath. BUT, this thing is almost like Ebola with the bleeding and liquefying of organs. Sorry but that is WAY more dangerous than any walker out there. They keep referring to it as a flu but if it is a flu like thing...antibiotics won't work anyway. They only work on bacterial infections. If it's a virus....they are screwed. I'm Team Carol on this one.

I hate to say it, but this show is losing a lot of steam for me. I really want to see more about why all this happened-i mean the zombie apocalypse and stuff. That's where I thought this was all gonna eventually go considering the CDC guy's message. But I'm not familiar with the print story at all so who knows.

I think you missed the whole point with the CDC...there is no cure, the world is over and there's no point in hoping for answers because there aren't any.

This show is about surviving something like this, living in a new normal...if you are looking for something more like WWZ you're in the wrong place and that should have been obvious after they went to the CDC.

I wouldn't say that was obvious. People are going to want to eventually know why "everyone is infected." I think if they leave that unanswered you're going to have a lot of disappointed viewers. It's just getting little boring for me-same story every week it seems…..go scouting or scavenging, attacked by zombies, then Rick give a serious stare.

They never went to the CDC in the comics so when they went there on the show I figured it was to show there was no hope and no answers, that this is it. This is now life you know, just try to nip that part of the question in the bud by blowing it up...lol

Never going to happen. Kirkman himself has said he will never explain or explore why this happened. It's not the point of the series. And if Kirkman isn't going to explore it in the comics, it's very unlikely that the TV series will ever get into it, unless it becomes an end of series kind of thing.
