EPISODE 13: The Same Boat

THE HOOK: Carol and Maggie have to fend for themselves as their captors take refuge in a safe house to figure out their next move.

The following contains MAJOR SPOILERS, so I don’t recommend reading this if you haven’t watched this episode

THE LOWDOWN: “We’re all Negan.” I could be wrong, but I don’t recall the Saviors talking like a cult in the comics. That said, I appreciate the tactic, kind of like, “I’M SPARTACUS.” “NO, I’M SPARTACUS.” One thing I am sure of, is that these Saviors are a tricky bunch. Sure, they got their asses handed to them on the road, and in their complex, but let’s be brutally honest here, this bunch isn’t expecting another alpha group. They have safe houses, secret frequencies and military type back up plans, which in turn, Rick’s crew aren’t expecting. That said, obviously, Rick’s group get the ‘win’ in this bout because Negan’s group keep underestimating their prey at every turn.

Maggie. Any guy will tell you not to mess with his woman when the hormones are a flying. Well, friend, Maggie’s hormones are in overdrive, with machine guns and no time for small talk. Talk about a change of pace for her character. One minute she’s the proper, well-spoken diplomat securing their place in Alexandria and solidifying negotiations at Hilltop. Then, after being nabbed by Negan’s people, she’s calm, collected and still pleasant to deal with, considering. But when opportunity comes a knocking, she’s became one woman army that would make Ripley herself nod in approval. She wastes no time in taking out the trash tonight and I have to say it looked good on her.

Carol. Then there’s Carol. Sigh. I get the feeling she’s nearly done, as in she may be the one to go in the finale. Although, Carol IS what’s beautiful about tonight’s episode. She was the lioness waiting patiently for her prey to make a mistake. She had them completely fooled. They lowered their guard, and she pounced. Like I said, nothing short of beautiful. That’s the Carol I love, and have faith in, but then there’s the other side, the damaged side that just can’t take it anymore. Each death weighs heavier than the last, but her hesitation tonight was different. She saw herself in Paula, quite literally. I get that she didn’t want to shoot her, I do, had it been me I’d have probably felt the same way, so I can’t hold that hesitation against her. I’m just glad Maggie was all too eager to put that bitch down. Done deal, baby, done deal. Is that barbecue I smell?

THE WALKING DEAD SEASON 6’s thirteenth episode is the kind of filler I expected, albeit the good kind. I knew something would have to happen to kill time both tonight and next week, making way for the final two episodes and I don’t mind. I love Melissa McBride, and I sincerely hope she’s not the one to go when the smoke clears. Tonight was interesting in the way that both Carol and Maggie are visibly troubled by these latest enemies. Killing people (evil or not) isn’t the same as killing walkers, and tonight is proof of how taxing it can be. Not for Rick though, apparently. You’re Negan, you say? Fantastic! BOOM! I will admit, I totally loved that part. They’re definitely putting an ugly dent in Negan’s crew, which will make for quite the showdown when Negan finally reveals himself. I’m as pumped as I am terrified.

ZOMBIE KILL OF THE WEEK: Paula killing the interrogation room walker, putting a knife through its face and mere inches from Maggie’s.

BLOOD AND GORE: There are a lot of knife to the head kills tonight, trails of blood and impaled walkers. A few people get roasted too, but we don’t see it.

COOLEST SCENE: Rick shooting Premo in the face after he declares himself Negan. Somehow I don’t think he figured that would happen.

FINAL VERDICT:
